Summary: Yes, we see it, too. Jujutsu Kaisen and Bleach in the same season. With these two titans vying for the top spot, there’s still plenty of room for the rest of the lineup to impress.
Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 delivers more exquisite storytelling and worldbuilding, though your mileage may vary depending on how insufferable you find Rudeus at the center of it all. Elsewhere, Bungo Stray Dogs is a dark horse contender for anime of the season.
Additionally, summer is a great season for things to get weird. Between The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again Today and Reborn as a Vending Machine, Now I Wander the Dungeon, those with a fondness for the bizarre will be well catered to.
Also keep an eye on Rurouni Kenshin’s reboot. The original was a late 90s classic, and a refresh was just what it needed to be introduced to a new generation.

Returning: Vinland Saga, Tokyo Revengers and Bungo Stray Dogs, Among Others
The most anticipated anime of the Winter 2023 season, at least according to MyAnimeList, is Vinland Saga Season 2. With a widely popular first season, the action show will reprise Thorfinn’s journey as he is bought as a slave by a landowner. Another storyline will follow Canute, who is now King of England and trying to create ‘the promised land.’ The show, inspired by Viking and Norse history, is sure to appease old fans and new with an action-packed new season. The show will be available on Netflix and Crunchyroll and will begin streaming on January 10.
Another couple of returning titles hold second and third place on the list. The Misfit of Demon King Academy, which followed the attempts of Demon King Anos to be recognized in his role, is coming back for a second season after two years. The official website’s synopsis teases a new impending battle for Anos. However, for those who prefer school and romance to fantasy, Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro is also returning with a second season, promising new sweet tortures for Naoto. The anime will be streamed by Crunchyroll starting January 8.
The heavily anticipated new season of Tokyo Revengers will finally premiere in January under the title Tokyo Revengers: Christmas Showdown. The Tokyo Manji Gang is back, as is Takemichi’s struggle to change the past in order to save his middle school girlfriend Hinata. The preview shows the Tokyo Manji Gang ready to fight against their new enemy, the Black Dragon. The rights to the anime have gone to Disney+, which will stream it in Asia at some point in January.
Moreover, the literary-themed action-packed seinen Bungo Stray Dogs Season 4 will debut on Crunchyroll starting January 4. Fans of the series will be excited to see their favorite detectives return — and this time, they are faced with the Hunting Dogs, a military unit highly suspicious of their methods.
Promising New Concepts: Buddy Daddies, Hikari no Ou and Revenger
Not at the top of the list but certainly deserving of some attention, a few new titles stand out for their originality, visual quality or charm. Following in the steps of Spy x Family, Buddy Daddies uses the old concept of a made-up family to tell a new story of assassins Kazuki and Rei raising a little girl together. If not for ingenuity, the anime stands out for its character design and animation. Similarly, Revenger, the story of a samurai bent on finding out the truth about the murders of the Satsuma clan, draws on the trope of the revenger but mixes it with mystery and adds beautiful character designs. The most interesting premise, however, comes from fantasy anime Hikari no Ou, which is set after humanity’s last war and blends dystopia and mystery to follow the story of young girl Touko and the ‘King of the Fire Hunters.’
As for ONAs, Netflix’s The Way of the Househusband is returning for a second season. More remarkably, Junji Ito’s work is being adapted once again, with 20 new stories merging into Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre, which is set to debut on January 19.

The second season of a popular mystery anime In/Spectre (虚構推理), which was scheduled to air in October, 2022, is postponed until January, 2023. Adapted from the popular mystery novel series written by Kyo Shirodaira since 2011, the anime adaptation was first released with 12 episodes in 2020. In/Spectre Season 2 is made by Brain’s Base as well as the previous season.
In/Spectre centers on a female university student Kotoko Iwanaga, who lost one eye and one leg in return to become the Goddess of Wisdom for specters, and her immortal boyfriend Kuro Sakuragawa. They solve strange cases caused by the specters with their supernatural abilities. Following the Steel Lady Nanase arc in the first season presenting the encounter between Kotoko and Kuro, just see what kind of new case will happen next and how their relationship will change in the second season.

Summary: To think that spring’s offerings aren’t quite as bountiful as what we got in winter is an absolute fallacy, keeping in mind that the return of Demon Slayer alone is practically enough to carry an entire season. We had also pegged Dr. Stone Season 3 and Konosuba as heavy hitters, and both proved to be absolute delights, providing the delicious chaos of chemistry and/or wizardry in equal measure.
With that said, Hell’s Paradise is a late elevation to the coveted “bold text status”, because it will absolutely resurface in the anime of the year discussion when all is said and done. The quest of Gabimaru the Hollow to procure the Elixir of Life is a brutal, bloody affair that makes the wait for each new episode practically exhausting.
On the other end of the spectrum, Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage has been so mirthful, bridging the gap from season 1’s surprisingly grim tale of chivalry with much lower stakes. This is more character building than must-see content, but considering how lovable those characters happen to be, we’re really not complaining.
Lastly, Mashle is sneaky good, dishing out some of the best laughs of 2023. On paper, it is One Punch Man + Harry Potter, but the actual application of this formula really pays off in unexpected ways.

For fans of both anime and games, good news has been just announced: The 2017 hit game Nier: Automata’s anime adaptation is coming to the winter of 2023 titled Nier: Automata Ver1.1a. Nier: Automata, developed by PlatinumGames and published by Square Enix, was initially released as an action role-playing game for PlayStation 4 and Windows in 2017, which recorded over 6 million sales around the globe. Nier: Automata Ver1.1a is made by the popular anime studio A-1 Pictures, which has been recently famous for Sword Art Online and Lycoris Recoil. It features some voice actors of proven worth including Yui Ishikawa (voicing Violet Evergarden in Violet Evergarden and Mikasa Ackerman in Attack on Titan) and Natsuki Hanae (voicing Tanjiro Kamado in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and Ken Kaneki in Tokyo Ghoul).
Nier: Automata Ver1.1a is set in a post-apocalyptic world, taking place thousands of years after an ending of the previous game title Nier Gestalt/Replicant’s multiple storylines. Human beings are driven out of the earth to the moon after an alien invasion. For humankind to regain the lost earth, human-made androids are sent to the earth to fight against bio-machines produced by the aliens. This sci-fi anime focuses on new-type androids called YoRHa including a female protagonist 2B and a male android 9S.
