Attack on Titan
Original Run: September 9, 2009 – April 9, 2021Number of Volumes: 34
The plot of Attack on Titan revolves around the young Eren Jäger, his adoptive sister Mikasa Ackermann and his best friend Armin Arlert, who live together with the rest of humanity in cities that are protected by huge walls from the attacks of the so-called Titans, gigantic humanoid beings who devour people for no apparent reason.
The walls that promised peace have existed for 107 years. But one day the Titans break through the outermost Wall Maria and the people are pushed back further. Eren’s mother dies and he and many other people flee behind the second wall, Wall Rose. Eren swears when his mother dies that he will wipe out the Titans.
Kiriko – by Shingo Honda
A somewhat short horror manga series with a slasher, revenge sub-genre going for it. A group of people gets mysterious invitations to attend a get-together and remember a past, deceased friend. However, soon the gathered start to fall one by one. That too, in such a dreadful fashion, that it will give you more chills than the cold Winter air! The manga explores various aspects of the human psyche, focusing on guilt and one’s guilty conscience, suppressed memories, and slow descent into insanity. The artwork has lifelike qualities with surprisingly unsettling expressions and disturbingly gruesome characterizations. So, there is plenty in this series for horror lovers, and you have to stay back for the plot twist!
The Garden of Sinners

Set in the Japanese city of Mifune, Japan, predominantly in the late 1990s, Kara no Kyōkai follows the story of Shiki Ryōgi, a young teenager raised as a demon hunter who, after surviving a fatal accident, acquired the “mystical eyes of mortal perception”, which give him the ability to see the “death” of any entity in the form of lines and points.
Any cut, traced on that line, leads to the irreversible destruction of the essence of the object. recounts Mikiya Kokutō’s unflinching efforts to get closer to her when they were still high school students, and the evolution of their relationship. After gaining control over her ability, Shiki gets a job at Tōko Aozaki’s detective agency, Garan no Dō, where she investigates various supernatural cases taking place in Mifune and tries to find the meaning of Aozaki’s very existence.
The play is constructed from separate chapters, each containing her own story and different antagonists. Both the light novel and the films are presented in non-chronological order, with each chapter/feature film functioning as part of a collective narrative.
MANHOLE
Manhole is a horror manga that will make everyone uneasy since it is a realistic narrative with biological horror elements. It all starts with a nude, bloodied man emerging one day from a manhole. The man, unbeknownst to anybody, is infected with a lethal biological weapon. Two investigators try to figure out what’s causing the illness as the tale continues. This manga could be best described as a detective story, but what makes it truly a horror manga is the deadly infection and the things it causes to happen. Manhole is a great, but unsettling read. There’s nothing supernatural happening. Instead, it’s a very realistic tale. Especially in times of the global Corona pandemic, this one’s truly scary and might hit a bit too close to home for some.
Parasyte – Hitoshi Iwaaki
Parasyte
Science fiction and horror collide in Hitoshi Iwaaki’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers-esque manga series, Parasyte. Alien invasion stories like Parasyte maximise the gruesome horror aspect of humans serving as hosts to invaders.
High school student Shinichi Izumi awakens one morning in terror as he attempts to fend off a worm-like alien parasite trying to burrow into his nose. However, Shinichi doesn’t escape the attack unscathed. The parasite instead enters inside his arm and takes over, thus becoming part of Shinichi. Half-infested by the host creature, Shinichi and the parasite form a bond and strive to stop the other parasites from completely taking over humanity.
Parasyte is another classic series that ends up on horror manga lists often, due to its artistic composition and eccentric premise.
Magical Girl Apocalypse (Kentaro Sato, 2012 – 2017)
If there’s one series that’s drastically changed my worldview, it’s probably this one. From overly cute and dangerously underage to just plain dangerous–that’s how my perspective on magical girls or the “mahou shoujo” genre took a 180-degree turn. They’re cute, they’re little, and they’ll probably “recruit” you to join their undead army.
I’ve watched my fair share of Puella Magi Madoka Magica to know that this genre could be heart-wrenchingly cruel if the mangaka (manga artist) wishes it. This time though, they’ve turned up the edginess to the max and made these magical girls into real murder dolls.
Some might say that it’s pretty messed up, but that’s what makes this a must-read for horror manga lovers. Magical girls have been overused and abused for a very long time; this manga feels like their way of fighting back and truly breaking free of their “cute and sweet” mold.

Homunculus
After watching Ichi The Killer (a personal favorite), I learned it was based on a manga by Hideo Yamamoto. Another of his works is Homunculus, and it is a trip. Have you ever heard of the process of Trepanation? It involves drilling a hole in the skull, which for some cultures was a way to release evil spirits, and to others a way to achieve a higher plane of thought and sight. If you were homeless and someone offered you a ton of cash to undergo such a procedure…would you?
That’s the situation in which Nakoshi finds himself. He realizes that by covering his right eye and only looking through his left, he starts seeing distorted humans or “homunculi.” Some of these represent inner turmoil or personal flaws. The designs are bizarre and varied: trees, insects, warping and stretching limbs, and even flowing sand. I was unaware Homunculus is being made in a Netflix film, due to debut in April 2021! If it’s even a fraction as wild as the manga, I will be pleased.
1 Alice in Borderland
This series takes readers to an eerie, deserted city covered in vegetation known as Borderland. Protagonist Ryōhei Arisu finds himself inexplicably sent there with some of his friends and locked into a variety of potentially deadly games.
Now trapped in a mysterious, dangerous world, Arisu and co.’s lives depend on being able to play the location’s eclectic blend of games successfully. Early on, readers are hit hard with how deadly the protagonists’ situation can be when they play a questions and answers game that involves flaming arrows being shot into anyone who gets the wrong answer. Haro Aso’s suspenseful venture into isekai fare proved to be a huge hit with readers during its six-year run during the 2010s. With likable, grounded characters, compelling mystery, and an often terrifying new world to explore, the series has also enjoyed a live action adaptation back in 2020 on Netflix.
Homonculus (2003-11) by Hideo Yamamoto
Living out of his car, 34 year old Susumu Nakesha has opted for homelessness despite coming from a successful background in business. One day, he is approached by a man offering to pay him for experimental surgery in the form of trepanation (the procedure of drilling a hole in the skull for enlightenment or health reasons). Hardship eventually leads Nakesha to accept the offer and indulge the eccentric man who aims to gift him enlightenment through the procedure. However, it gives the man a peculiar gift, to see other people’s insecurities manifested in strange distorted visions, along with the ability to take on those peoples burdens himself.
“Homunculus” maps the mental decline of Susumu Nakesha and his loss of self identity in taking on mental deformities. Consequently, the sense of identity becomes further lost in others marring his own quest to come to terms with his troubled past. As his self awareness begins to fade, he takes on the dangerous procedure himself and begins to expand the hole in his head. Tragic and horrifying, Hideo Yamamaoto crafted one of the most engaging character studies in the psychological horror genre.
“Homonculus” can be purchased here.
Tokyo Ghoul
If you are looking for an unsettling yet engrossing story, Tokyo Ghoul has a lot to offer. Set in Tokyo, protagonist Ken Kanji’s first date ends in pure horror as he is attacked and turns into a half-ghoul. Ghouls are beings that eat humans. Automatically, the reader may think that the ghouls are the enemies, but the series does a great job showcasing many sides and moral dilemmas: the detectives relentlessly hunting ghouls down, the maniacal ghouls, the peaceful ghouls, and the corrupt officials.
Ken’s character can be hard to like at first, but he shows great character development after going through so much torment, transforming into almost a completely different person. Many of the characters are interesting and fit into the story quite well, making it a great manga for horror fans.
Jagaaaaaan
Author Name | Kaneshiro Muneyuki |
Number of Episodes and Status | 163 (Completed) |
Genre | Horror, Mystery, Supernatural |
Personal Rating | 8.50 |
Drawing inspiration from the popular manga series “Parasyte,” “Jagaaaaaan” offers a more mystery-focused narrative accompanied by refined and visually stunning artwork. Created by the same author behind “Blue Lock,” this manga doesn’t disappoint in any aspect.
From its eye-catching art style to its compelling plot twists, “Jagaaaaaan” has it all. The only downside is that it hasn’t been officially translated into English. However, the entire manga can be found and enjoyed online through unofficial fan translations.
Synopsis: Shintarou is a teenage boy who is bored with his everyday life. One day, his boring life comes to an end when he witnesses a murder that is committed by a person with a monster face. When he is about to be murdered, he helplessly aims his fingers at the monster person and shoots like a person. Surprisingly, the monster guy dies as a projectile emerged from his fingertips and killed it.
He later learns from an owl that he is infected by Mad Xenopus, a frog-like parasite that controls the body according to its desire, just like the monster person. Gaining this new power, Shintarou decides to eradicate all of these monster people. Will he be successful or will he fall prey to this immense power?
8 Tomie
3 Volumes, 20 Chapters
Tomie, by Junji Ito, follows Tomie Kawakami, a succubus-like creature who goes around making men go violent against each other like a beautiful agent of chaos. Nobody knows what Tomie is or how to stop her. Instead, she’s immortal and can exist in different places at the same time, in a hive-mind state that allows her to kill even more people. It’s impossible to kill Tomie unless her body is carbonized. Even then, she reproduces at an incredibly fast rate, so the series gives an eerie claustrophobic vibe because she’s all-mighty and can be anywhere at any given time. This makes Tomie one of the scariest manga ever.
Attack on Titan by Hajime Isayama
Everyone and their dog knows what Attack on Titan is, but if you have yet to actually check it out, I promise it’s worth your time. Attack on Titan is a seinen manga that blends action and horror spectacularly.
Arguably more of an action manga with big political themes, Attack on Titan remains enough of a horror manga at its heart to include it on this list. It has certainly chilled my blood more than a few times. The world of Attack on Titan is small, in the beginning: a city surrounded by high, thick walls, with districts also divided by more tall walls.
These walls are the city of Shiganshina’s only defence against strange, uncannily humanlike giant monsters known as titans. These house-sized titans seem to exist only to chase and devour humans. It’s in the design of these titans where the horror is first evident. Not only are they enormous, hungry, imposing, intimidating things that devour human’s in a single bite. They are also drawn with a wonderfully creepy edge.
Uneven, naked frames with long limbs and grinning faces; sorrowful eyes and bared teeth; loose, clumsy movements. These are uncanny, ambiguous, hungry, mindless, sad, confused, dangerous things. Their design is horror, through and through.
Initsu
We include Initsu because it hits the same horror beats as Zashiki Onna in that the plot is pure creep factor. The story begins with protagonist Kazuki leaving his house to empty his bins only to find a young girl sitting nearby. The girl asks him if he has a little sister and soon starts invading his life in terrifying ways.

Article continues after ad
This story is scary because it begins with Kazuki simply doing mundane chores before spiraling off into madness and horror. It also gets incredibly gruesome in parts, but how can you look away from something that’s been drawn by such a talented artist as Ryou Haruto?
Pumpkin Night – by Masaya Hokazono
Gore galore! Pumpkin Night gives glory to all that is gory! Puns aside, this manga is a sweet treat of gorefest for horror lovers. Especially those who love to see loads of bloody, visceral matter flying around. A slasher story follows a girl out on a murder spree, rampaging around to exact revenge on those who wronged her. The plot by itself will leave its reader base divided into the rights and wrongs. And the striking artwork adds plenty of brownie points, making it a clear choice of horror manga to be read. And once you pick it up, chances are you won’t be stopping till the end as each chapter builds its own suspense.
Ibitsu
Author Name | Ryou Haruto |
Number of Chapters and Status | 15 (Completed) |
Genre | Horror, Tragedy |
Personal Rating | 8.00 |
“Ibitsu” features a unique and somewhat quirky art style that perfectly complements the manga’s atmosphere. Though it only has a few chapters, the story leaves a chilling impression that lingers in your mind. Its simple, straightforward plot makes it an ideal choice for a quick read. Additionally, the manga has been published in English, allowing you to add it to your collection and revisit the story whenever you’d like.
Synopsis: Kazuki is a high school boy who lives alone in an apartment. One day when he is taking out the trash, he sees a girl with pale skin wearing a Lolita costume near the trash. He ignores her unintentionally but when he is passing by her, she asks “Would you like a little sister?” and he says yes, despite already having a little sister.
After that, every night Kazuki feels like her little sister is visiting him but when he asks her, she says no. Kazuki soon realizes that the Lolita girl is stalking him and even trying to enter his house daily. Will Kazuki regret the affirmation that he made to this Lolita girl about having a little sister and endangering the life of her real little sister?
Higurashi When They Cry (Ryukishi07, 2005- 2011)
Manga romanticizes the most trivial things and makes them more attractive than they really are. Take moving from the city to the remote provinces, for example. It’s borderline boring, but add in a childhood friend, eager new classmates, and a cursed village…you’ll see the story spring to life!
That’s what happens with Higurashi When They Cry: the main character moves to the boondocks, makes friends, and learns that the village he’s living in now is cursed.
No biggie.
This manga has been adapted from a visual novel; basically, a story-telling game that could have different outcomes depending on the character story arcs you select. That’s the element that made this title stand out among other horror titles: you repeat a storyline while focusing on different characters, so the story evolves, and you see how it all plays out.

8 Helter Skelter by Kyoko
The Promised Neverland by Kaiu Shirai and Posuka Demizu
One of the most popular manga of today, The Promised Neverland is everywhere, and for very good reason. Just do yourself a favour and avoid the anime at all costs. Stick to the manga; it’s a masterpiece.
The Promised Neverland is a genre-bending manga that blends fantasy, horror, sci-fi, and more. But the horror elements are its most prominent and outstanding features, especially where Demizu’s art is concerned.
The story of The Promised Neverland follows a group of children at an orphanage known as Grace Field House. The children are all presided over and looked after by an enigmatic but kind figure, Isabella, whom the kids refer to as Mom. Every day, the kids complete tests, eat together, and play outside.
Our three protagonists are Emma, Norman, and Ray. They’re the oldest and smartest kids in the orphanage and, when our story begins, they soon learn the truth of what Grace Field House is and what their future has in store for them. This leads to a desperate plan to escape the house and their fate.
The horror elements of The Promised Neverland hit spectacularly in the art department. There are gruesome close-ups, jump scares, reveals, and sudden shifts in perspective that Demizu handles with the deft hand of an experienced horror director. The demons of The Promised Neverland are some of the most imaginatively realised monster designs in recent memory.

VIZ Signature / VIZ Media
Pumpkin Night
Author Name | Hokazono Masaya |
Number of Chapters and Status | 81 (Ongoing) |
Genre | Horror, Action, Tragedy |
Personal Rating | 8.20 |
“Pumpkin Night” falls within the slasher genre, which typically involves a killer stalking victims with sharp objects. While the plot may not be particularly intricate or profound, the horror elements truly stand out.
In many slasher-genre stories, it’s often possible to predict the stalker’s next move. However, in “Pumpkin Night,” readers are confronted with the true brutality and ruthlessness of the stalkers.
Synopsis: Naoko is an intelligent and diligent high school girl who loves to celebrate Halloween and is kind to everyone. But she is also bullied by many people in his class. Due to this bullying, she becomes mentally ill and is admitted to a mental hospital.
She reaches her wit’s end there and escapes the hospital by killing every staff member. Now, she has only one aim: to kill every person who bullied her during high school and she does this by disguising herself by wearing a Halloween Pumpkin mask. Will someone be saved by the claws of this maniac girl?
MR. ARASHI’S AMAZING FREAK SHOW
There is no question; Mr. Arashi’s Amazing Freak Show is only for experienced horror lovers. It can be quite hard on the readers, quite graphic and there are some pretty triggering scenes as well. Midori, a young orphan girl is taken by Mr. Arashi, the owner of a traveling freak show. She is not kept in desirable conditions. The cruel owner is particularly harsh on her and doesn’t allow them much freedom. She is forced to look after the freaks, which is no little girl’s dream.
These dark and scary mangas will not only give you nightmares but make you think and question traditional social norms. Because while horror Japanese graphic novels or mangas are usually entertaining (in an entirely petrifying way), they also often serve stunning art and surprisingly in-depth stories about the layers of humanity. If you’re new to horror mangas, you’ll find that they almost always make their readers question and think about social norms, dogmas as well as philosophical and ethical principles.

4 Blood on the Tracks
For fans of psychological horror like Silence of the Lambs and The Babadook, this manga by Shūzō Oshimi will scratch that itch. It follows a boy named Seiichi and his mother Seiko. To Seiichi, life seems to be pretty normal under his mother’s care. However, following an incident on a hiking trip, he begins to question everything he knows about his life and the woman who cares for him. It’s best to go into this story as blindly as possible because of the mystery surrounding Seiko as a character. It’s ripe with twists and turns that will keep readers on edge as they journey through this series that recently reached its conclusion in Japan after a 16-volume run.
Domu: A Child’s Dream — Katsuhiro Otomo
Domu A Child’s Dream — Katsuhiro Otomo
Katsuhiro Otomo penned and illustrated the watershed cyberpunk manga series Akira from 1982 to 1990. However, readers can identify similar themes and influences in Otomo’s predecessor manga, the science-fiction horror series Domu: A Child’s Dream.
In the twisted tale, a man imbued with extrasensory powers enslaves the tenants living inside a block of apartment complexes. Old Cho forces the occupants to murder one another – or themselves – as an act of psychic control. All hope seems lost until a young girl displaying psychic powers of her own may be the solution to eliminating Cho’s sadistic reign of power.
Domu: A Child’s Dream may clock in at only 300 pages, but the devastating thriller leaves a lasting impression with its disturbing central characters and blood-soaked illustrations.
