4 WANT: MUMBAI MUSICAL
Following a series of financial disappointments, DreamWorks shuttered PDI, its Redwood City studio, and significantly cut down its release slate in 2015 in preparation for selling itself to Universal. B.O.O., Puss in Boots 2 and Madagascar 4 were among the projects canceled at that time, but by far the biggest disappointment is the cancelation of Mumbai Musical.
This was an adaptation of the Hindu epic The Ramayana, told from the perspective of the monkey characters. It was to be a Bollywood musical with songs by A.R. Rahman and Stephen Schwartz. The concept art was next-level gorgeous and would have been amazing to see brought to life on the big screen.
Story
The Prince of Egypt (1998)
The Prince of Egypt tells the story of Moses from him being adopted from the rivier by the Pharaohs, to leading his people out of Egypt. He grew up with his brother Rameses having fun and messing around his kingdom, he later learns that he is a Hebrew child and after killing an Egyption salve-driver, runs away from his home. After being welcome into the tribe of Jethro and and being wed to his daughter Tzipporah (whom he rescued from Egypt), God comes to Moses and reminds him of the Hebrew slaves and how Moses must stand up to the Pharaoh as well as God showing Egypt his powerful and harmful wonders if the Pharaoh denies his request. Moses goes back to Egypt where his brother Rameses is thew new king, Rameses refuses to let his slaves go resulting in God sending many Plagues sent by God (which ends with the death of Rameses’ son). Rameses lets the children of Isreal go but later changes his mind and tries to murder them and his former brother, God saves them by parting the sea while behind him a pillar of fire writhes before the Egyptian army, blocking their way. The Hebrews cross on the sea bottom; when the pillar of fire disappears and the army gives chase, the water closes over the Egyptian soldiers to their watery deaths, and the Hebrews are freed. However, Rameses is spared, as he is hurled back to the shore by the collapsing waves, screaming in defeated fury over the death of his soldiers and crying out to Moses in anger, despair and heartbreak because of all that has been happened. Feeling sorry over Rameses’s loss, Moses makes bids his brother goodbye one last time and leads the Hebrew people to Mount Sinai, where he is given the Ten Commandments to deliver to them.
Joseph: King of Dreams (2000)
Joseph is the youngest son of Jacob and is given a Colorful coat, his half brothers are jealous and angry so they sell him to slave traders. He is taken to Egypt and put through many trials (being accused by his masters Wife of rape and thrown in Jail, ect), But later is made ‘Second in Command’ after translating Pharaoh’s dreams. Joseph prevents famine in the land. The home of Joseph, however, is in famine so Jacob’s sons goe to Egypt and request food Pharoah. Joseph (although not reconizible) sees his brothers and puts them to a test to see if have redeemed themselves. Joseph orders his full brother, Benjamin, to be thrown in Prison, his brothers ask to take his place (Benjamin is Joseph’s full brother and son of Jacob’s favorite wife, Rachel. He’s already lost Joseph and wouldn’t be able to bear the loss of Rachel’s other son, Benjamin.) The brothers are sorrowed and repent. Joseph reveals himself to them and says that ‘he forgives’ them and invites Jacob and the rest of the family and Hebrews to live in Egypt.
Future
It is unknown yet unlikly for a third movie based on joshua to be made, since DreamWorks’ 2D department was shutdown due to the box-office failure of Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas. Unless it’s computer animated or a diffrent story is made with CGI.

Another Shrek
Work is also afoot on another Shrek movie. Of most note, perhaps, is the role that Chris Meledandri had in pushing this forward. Meledandri is the top dog at Illumination, Universal’s other – and lately, better – animation studio. He was given an advisory role at Dreamworks after the acquisition, and one of the first jobs he was specifically charged with was working out how to get Shrek back on screen. A complete do-over would be my preferred approach. Shrek was ugly to start with, and its badly designed characters won’t be saved by new technological spit-and-polish. Also, a complete do-over could keep the costs low, because I can’t imagine the original cast will come back for anything modest. Why would they? So will Dreamworks play it safe and expensive and finally wring the last drop of blood out of their sometime-flagship franchise? Or will they get the nerve to start all over and give Shrek a chance at being a film series people can actually care about?
Shrek 2 — 3.8
Now that Shrek has received his happily ever after with Fionna, it’s time to explore what’s after the happy ending. Shrek 2 answers that very question. Shrek and Fionna are called to the land of Far Far Away to meet Fionna’s parents, the king, and queen. All the while, the magical Fairy Godmother and her son Prince Charming are scheming for a way to steal Fionna away from Shrek.
Shrek 2 is considered one of the best sequels and adds a bunch of new characters to the lore of Shrek, which Letterboxd fans instantly became fans of. Many point to Puss in Boots and Donkey’s relationship as a highlight for the film. While, for some, it doesn’t quite reach the heights of the original, many consider it just as good as the first.
6 The Prince of Egypt
DreamWorks Animation
Utilizing traditional animation in tremendous tandem with computer-generated imagery, The Prince of Egypt (1998) is among the most visually stunning films in animation as a whole. It’s since been regarded by pundits and fans alike as one of the highest-quality films to stem from DreamWorks Animation, period, and with good reason. It holds up just wonderfully today as a retelling of the first fourteen chapters of the Bible’s Book of Exodus.
That said: it spawned a direct-to-video spinoff prequel called Joseph: King of Dreams (2000) that was far less revered upon release, and hasn’t exactly gained traction since. Obviously tackling the book of Joseph from the same religious text as its mainline tie-in, its animation was a far cry from the first Prince of Egyptproject. But that first film in what is technically a series single-handedly lands it here at number six.
In limbo…
It looks like Dreamworks don’t have a film on the docket for 2018, which would make for their first skip-year since 1999. I expect they’ll end up moving one of their 2019 films forward… Or maybe they’ve got something else, unannounced, and almost ready to enter animation? If so, the lead contender could be their Hot Stuff: The Little Devil film, a live action-animation hybrid – I told you they were going to get heavily into these – licensed from the Harvey Comics character. This is one I think we might actually see. Also in limbo, but with less of a chance of escape, are their long-developing Blue Booby film; a toon version of the Sid and Marty Krofft ‘classic’ Lidsville – for which Alan Menken wrote songs and Audrey Wells wrote a screenplay; or maybe even Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig’s Flawed Dogs. All-in-all, the future of Dreamworks is quite hard to forecast right now. I think we’ll soon be hearing of some new projects, initiated under the new watch, and those will be the ones that make or break their fortunes in the coming years. It’s a shame that so many projects have been warmed up only to go stony cold over the years, but it’s the way of the big, cash-burning Hollywood movie studio that this is how business gets done. It’s massive-scale risk aversion, and a slap in the face of artistic endeavour. How disappointing. And then, on the upside… well, I’m looking forward to How To Train Your Dragon 3 and Shadows. How about you?
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World — 3.6
The third and final entry in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World sees Hiccup as chief of Burk. This time around, the Dragons are in danger, and Hiccup and the whole of Burk look for a way to save them. Meanwhile, Toothless meets a Lightfury Dragon whom he falls in love with.
This film is tied with the second film mainly because it suffers from the same issues. While the story was an interesting progression and once again sports great animation, the film left many viewers cold. The ending was something that many Letterboxd reviewers had an issue with as it didn’t feel like a satisfying resolution to the nine-year-old franchise.
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit — 3.6
The second film that DreamWorks collaborated with Aardman was Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. Aardman is well known for doing stop-motion animation so this makes for a unique film within DreamWorks catalog. The film follows Aardman’s classic characters Wallace and Gromit as they have a run-in with the Were-Rabbit who threatens to ruin the annual veggie-growing contest.
Wallace and Gromit already had several short films to their name so there was a large fanbase willing to go along for a feature-length ride. The purity of the film resonated with many on Letterboxd as they point out how true the film feels to the central characters.
17 DON’T WANT: ANTZ 2
The first Antz is actually a better movie than you might remember. It’s not as cute as A Bug’s Life but it’s at least as funny and much more dramatically involving. Even so, it’s still a movie starring Woody Allen that was at least somewhat marketed towards children. That gag reflex that comes up when you hear «Woody Allen» and «children» in the same sentence is the biggest reason it’s for the better Antz didn’t become a big franchise.
In addition to the Woody Allen factor, there’s also the fact that this sequel was being considered as a direct-to-video release rather than a theatrical one, which doesn’t show the greatest confidence in its quality. The project fizzled away when DreamWorks abandoned DTV productions.
14 WANT: MAINTENANCE
Jim Massey and Robbi Rodriguez’s Oni Press comic series Maintenance is about the janitors at a evil science lab. The comedic twist on sci-fi tropes is pretty much ready-made for the sensibilities of DreamWorks Animation around the time of Monsters vs. Aliens and Megamind. Someone at DreamWorks clearly thought so too, given the studio acquired the rights for a movie version.
No news has been announced about the project since the 2010 rights acquisition, so it seems safe to assume this isn’t happening. Still, with Rodriguez’s co-creation Spider-Gwen now a movie star, perhaps there might be a push to get this into production in the near future.

Mumbai Musical
Nobody ever seemed to say, conclusively, that Mumbai Musical was cancelled, but it publicly lost its release date and that’s pretty much the same thing. At the moment, it’s hard to unpick what went down, but it seems like Dreamworks had two duelling musical monkey films in development at once, couldn’t make their mind up about which to produce, and both stalled. Mumbai Musical was developed by Gurinder Chadha, apparently handed off to Enchanted director Kevin Lima, and had songs by A. R. Rahman. None of this would have been cheap, nor entered into lightly. Chances are, this film had so much work and passion poured into it that it would make your head spin. But then, without explanation, the film vanished from the schedule. Lima, we understand, was off the project as far back as 2014. So that’s that. The other monkey film was Vivo, with songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Sony are going to finish that one and release it in 2020, because they know a good thing when they see it – though, of course, I would have said the same thing about Dreamworks when they booked Miranda off the back of In The Heights in 2009.
Kung Fu Panda — 3.6
Kung Fu Panda follows the adventures of a panda named Poe. Poe is chosen to be the fabled Dragon Warrior and has to train with the best martial artists in the land to stop the coming of the evil Tai Lung. The film came out in 2008 and would go on to inspire two sequels, and a few spin-off shows.
Letterboxd users find this film endlessly quotable, especially lines from great Master Oogway. More than anything, the film seemed to take many by surprise, giving a great love letter to kung-fu movies with a deeply heartfelt plot. It sports an impressive voice cast, a well-written villain, and very well choreographed martial arts sequences. All this made Kung Fu Panda one of the best DreamWorks Animated films.
История
1994—2004
How to Train Your Dragon 2 — 3.6
A few years after the first film was a surprise hit, How To Train Your Dragon 2 sees the return of Hiccup and his friends. Now that dragons have become an accepted part of the culture on Burk, Stoic, one of the best fathers, is looking to train Hiccup to be the next chief. The sudden return of Hiccup’s long thought dead mother and a terrifying new villain, create many new problems for the Dragon Riders.
Many users felt the second installment in the franchise sported impressive animation but ultimately the story didn’t resonate as much as the first film did. Nonetheless, it was still seen as a fun addition to the world that introduced cool new dragons and fun new characters to the series.
Trolls 2
A sequel to last year’s Trolls has been officially announced for 2020. The first film’s director, Mike Mitchell, has jumped over to take up the final leg on The Lego Movie Sequel, but he apparently made some contributions to the Trolls 2 story already. As far as we now, co-director Walter Dohrn is staying on, maybe even this time promoted to solo director. The original Trolls movie started out tied-into Dreamworks adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s Truckers. None of the material really made it to the screen, and I can’t see it getting worked in now. Indeed, I’d be pretty sure that the opening for a Dreamworks Truckers movie has now closed.
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron — 3.6
One of the few 2D animated films that DreamWorks put out, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is a nostalgic favorite for many. Directed by Kelly Asbury & Lorna Cook, the film follows the adventures of a stallion named Spirit when America was settling in the west. Spirit befriends a man named Little Creek and together they escape to get Spirit home.
Many on Letterbox call this film an underrated classic. Even though the film has received a spin-off series on Netflix and a new movie was released last year, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron seems to have been lost to time. The animation on display in the film is a constant standout for many of the viewers who review the film and the well-written plot took many revisiting the film by surprise.
How To Train Your Dragon 3
Despite long-term plans that should have seen How To Train Your Dragon make its 2017 release date – if not, once upon a time, it’s 2015 release date – we’re now expecting the film in 2019. We’re promised the big finale, and a tying-up of everything Dean DeBlois has sewn into parts 1 and 2. Unfortunately, Dragon 2 didn’t do quite as well at the box-office as Dreamworks might have expected. On the plus side, it was a better film than the original. Still, there’s a lesson to be learned here about how long family film franchises can sit on the shelf without losing their sheen. Kids grow up… and until they’ve grown up a long, long way (cf. Disney’s Beauty And The Beast) they might not want to come back for more just yet. It’s worth noting that Dreamworks have kept the Dragon brand alive, as best they can, with the ongoing Dreamworks TV series. And here’s one for the pub quizzers amongst you: Dragons 1 was released by Paramount, 2 by Fox, and 3, barring yet another weird left-turn, will be released by Universal.
7 Trolls
DreamWorks Animation
Classified as a jukebox musical (one where the characters perform renditions of popular, established songs as opposed to original music), the first two movies in the Trolls franchise received great reviews from critics, and justifiably so. But it’s worth noting off the bat that a third entry in the franchise known as Trolls Band Together is set to release in November 2023. It adds some intrigue to the series as a whole, as it will include segments of 2D animation, and it will of course continue the trend of these movies featuring an ensemble voice cast.
But back to the first film: it follows two trolls named Poppy and Branch, voiced by Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake respectively, who set out to save their village from a brand of giant creatures known as the Bergens. With the tandem musical sequences, this is an entirely original premise, and Trolls could on any given day be placed a spot or two higher. The second iteration Trolls World Tour is just as significant a release, with both entries setting up decent anticipation for the third entry. This series could very well flourish further.
The rivalry between DreamWorks and Pixar
(Source: UOL)Source: UOL
Fans of animated films often see a positive rivalry between the productions of the two biggest studios in the genre: DreamWorks and Pixar. The decision on which studio would be the best will depend on many factors involving the subjectivity of fans.
But we can bring data that can help you, the reader, to position yourself on this issue. DreamWorks, as we have already mentioned here, has won many awards for its productions, and has very successful franchises in its catalog, such as Shrek, Madagascar, How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda and The Mighty Chef.
Pixar, on the other hand, has also garnered a lot of recognition. It has won an incredible 21 Oscars, 9 Golden Globes and 11 Grammys. Among his most famous works are films that are very dear to children, such as the franchises Toy Story, The Incredibles and Monsters Inc
If we look at stand-alone films – that is, films that do not have a sequel –, we will also find great works created by both studios. DreamWorks has produced, for example: The Chicken Run (2000), Bee Movie (2007), The Without Forest (2006), among many others. Pixar is the name behind films highly praised by critics and the public, such as Inside Out (2015), soul (2020), Wall-E (2008) and Looking for Nemo (2003).
The “competition” between the two studios is positive for the fans, as they continue to produce wonderful animations for us to follow. After all, we won, right?
