The Great Escape (1963)
Entertaining isn’t something one considers when watching a historical World War II film, but this did put a smile on my face. I may be partly quoting Thanos here, but this film warrants that description. Terrifically led by Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, James Garner and Charles Bronson amongst a host of other well-known faces, ‘The Great Escape’ details the exploits of hundreds of Allied prisoners of war who plan to escape from a German Camp after being captured during the Second World War. One of the film’s biggest strengths is that despite the host of characters, both mains and supporting ones, you grow to care for a majority of them, courtesy of a number of well written introduction scenes. One of the best WWII movies, quite simply put.

Jurassic Park

As perfect as summer blockbusters come, Steven Spielberg’s dino-epic still plays as magnificently today as it did that summer of 1993. Perhaps even more perfect now, in the wake of how godawful every Jurassic World movie turned out to be. Now we can really appreciate the magic that Spielberg worked with Michael Crichton’s concept of Dino DNA being mined and exploited for a friggin’ theme park, of all things. This thriller was ahead of its time in lampooning the ways that bored rich people trying to entertain themselves will be the ultimate destruction of humanity. “Maybe we can have a coupon day,” the lawyer giggles, not long before the T-Rex eats him on the toilet. But Spielberg keeps his satire out of the way of the dino-mite set pieces. So, even after a hundred viewings, I still find myself holding my breath for the entire length of that rampaging Rex sequence in the rain. — J.A.

Sound of Metal

Riz Ahmed shines in the lead role of Sound of Metal, a thoughtful and provocative movie about grief, addiction, and identity. He plays Ruben, a metal drummer who begins to experience hearing loss. He’s told to eliminate loud noises, but continues to perform, worrying that his career, relationship, and life as he knows it could soon be over.
Sound of Metal is a challenging watch at times, but one of the best Prime Video movies as it’s also deeply moving and introspective. You’ll need to be in a certain mood to watch it, but when you do, you’ll be blown away. A crowd-pleasing flick that was nominated for numerous Academy Awards in 2019, winning in the Best Sound and Best Film Editing categories. Easily one of the best Prime Video movies around.

This feature-film spinoff from the Jack Ryan franchise tells the origin story of John Clark (Michael B. Jordan), a fan-favorite character in Tom Clancy’s books. Before he’s John Clark, he’s John Kelly in the movie, which starts with the Navy SEAL successfully leading a top-secret op against former Russian soldiers. In retaliation, the group murders his pregnant wife and Kelly vows to avenge her. Kelly teams up with a fellow SEAL (Jodie Turner-Smith) and a shadowy CIA agent (Jamie Bell), but their mission ends up exposing a vast international conspiracy that threatens to trigger war between the U.S. and Russia. Kelly finds himself torn between personal honor and loyalty to his country as he and his allies try to avert disaster and reveal the powerful figures behind the conspiracy.
The Chrysanthemum and the Guillotine (2018)
Directed by Japanese auteur Takahisa Zeze, ‘The Chrysanthemum and the Guillotine’ is set against one of the most tumultuous times in Japanese history. The film depicts the drastic changes that Japan undergoes after the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. As the rise of nationalism takes place in the background, the narrative focuses on Kiku and Tamae, two women who are part of a group of all-female Sumo wrestlers. Elsewhere, Tetsu and Daijiro become involved with an anarchist group called the Guillotine Society with the desire to bring changes to their nation through violent rebellion. These two plot threads intersect each other when the anarchists begin attending the female Sumo matches.
Good Night Oppy

Documentary Good Night Oppy tells the story of the Mars rover Opportunity – nicknamed Oppy. When it was launched in 2003, it was expected to operate for only 90 solar days (each lasting just over 24 hours). However, the remarkable rover explored Mars for nearly 15 years, searching the landscape for signs of water and recording unprecedented scientific discoveries. Documentary maker Ryan White is behind the camera and is also known for his direction of acclaimed docs like Assassins, Ask Dr. Ruth, and The Case Against 8. His moving and heartfelt movie interviews engineers who were involved in the project and is narrated by Angela Bassett.
The Handmaiden

One of 2016’s darkest, sexiest, most intense films, The Handmaiden tells the story of the devious Sook-hee (Kim Tae-ri) and the enterprising Count Fujiwara (Ha Jung-woo) during the Japanese occupation of Korea. Fujiwara is a con artist who plans to milk a wealthy Japanese heiress for all that she’s worth, while Sook-hee is a pickpocket whom he contracts to pose as, you guessed it, the heiress’s handmaiden. But as Sook-hee grows closer and closer to the heiress, alliances shift and double-crosses become inevitable. The film doesn’t pull any punches on violence or eroticism, but it doesn’t shy away from a gripping story or complex characters, either.
Transit
German director Christian Petzold’s 2018 film updates the 1944 novel by Anna Seghers of the same name, which is about refugees trying to escape Nazi-occupied France to an alternate present where Europe exists under the thumb of a vague fascist rule.
Franz Rogowski plays a German man on the run from the authorities. To escape to Mexico, he’ll try to use the papers of a dead man whose body he’s discovered. While waiting for his literal ship to come in, Rogowski becomes romantically entangled with the dead man’s wife. Making matters more complicated, he develops a friendship with the dead man’s son. All as the walls close in and paths of escape get severed one by one. A slow-burn of speculative timeline political allegory a la The Man in the High Castle, Transit feels like a thriller that Kafka never wrote, where we’re smothered by paperwork and done in by signing on the dotted line. — J.A.

1959’s The Twilight Zone left a huge cultural impact, to the point of still being referenced to this day. Its success has directly or indirectly inspired many creators to try their hands at anthology series, and one of the most successful attempts was 1963’s The Outer Limits. The show basically added a heavy dose of sci-fi to The Twilight Zone, and the mix worked brilliantly. In 1995, a revival was launched that lasted for seven seasons, and it arguably surpassed its predecessor in many ways. For quite a long time, this series was not easy to find, but it is now available in its entirety on Amazon Prime Video.
As an anthology concept, most of the show’s episodes tell stand-alone stories with a fresh cast of characters and premises; however, The Outer Limits occasionally continues a previous narrative, and these segments are always a delight when they happen. Featuring a strong roster of contributing writers and frequently impressive performers, this 1995 series is surprisingly consistent, with most episodes managing to be at least decent. Obviously, a few stories such as «A Stitch in Time» and «Decompression» stand out from the crowd, but The Outer Limits rarely drops the ball.
The Burial

Set in 1995, The Burial is loosely based on the true story of Jerry O’Keefe, played here by Tommy Lee Jones. O’Keefe is a struggling funeral home owner facing financial difficulties who agrees to a contract with a man called Raymond Loewen of the Loewen Group to help him make ends meet. But Loewen doesn’t see their agreement through, and a bitter battle ensues. What follows is a riveting story that sees Jerry hiring a man called Willie E. Gary to help him (Jamie Foxx), a bold and showy personal injury layer.
Both Tommy Lee Jones and Jamie Foxx have been praised for their contrasting performances, making an unexpected legal team that take the story on some unexpected twists and turns. If you enjoy high stakes courtroom dramas with two fantastic leads, The Burial is a must-watch.

There are four movies in The Hunger Games movie collection, including the original movie, The Hunger Games, followed by The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2. The collection follows the story of resilient protagonist Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) as she fights to survive in a brutal, televised competition and then in the society that spawned it.
Expect a compelling dystopian narrative, social commentary, and some adrenaline-pumping action sequences. Be warned, this is a binge-worthy set of films, so be prepared to hunker down and watch all four in one movie marathon. And if you enjoy these first four The Hunger Games movies, then check out the prequel only released in November 2023, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
Suspiria

This Amazon Original is a supernatural horror inspired by Dario Argento’s classic 1977 Italian film of the same name. It stars Dakota Johnson as an American woman who enrols at a prestigious dance academy in Berlin but, unfortunately for her, it’s run by a coven of witches. Tilda Swinton bizarrely but convincingly co-stars in three roles.
Not for the faint-hearted, you can expect weirdness, gruesome scenes, and lots of deliciously disconcerting atmosphere from this one. Unlike the original film, which used exaggerated colors, it has a bleak and bare palette. Suspiria wasn’t a box office hit but, if you like odd, atmospheric movies, it’s a great choice.
Face/Off (1997)
Face/Off is a high-octane action thriller directed by John Woo, starring Nicolas Cage and John Travolta. The movie follows FBI Agent Sean Archer (Travolta) as he attempts to apprehend notorious terrorist Castor Troy (Cage).
When Troy is left comatose after an accident, Archer undergoes a risky surgical procedure to switch faces with Troy, in order to gain access to information about a potential terrorist attack. However, things quickly spiral out of control as Troy wakes up and steals Archer’s face, leading to a dangerous game of cat and mouse as both men try to outsmart each other while inhabiting the other’s body.
With impressive action sequences and intense performances from Cage and Travolta, «Face/Off» is a quintessential ’90s action movie that delivers on both style and substance. The film’s themes of identity, obsession, and redemption also add depth to the proceedings, making it a standout entry in the genre.
The Thing
«Man might be the warmest place to hide» according to the infamous tagline to John Carpenter’s 1982 classic sci-fi horror hybrid, but you’ll practically feel the frostbite nipping at your fingertips watching this chiller. An update on the 1951 film The Thing From Another World (itself based on the 1938 novella by John W. Campbell Jr.), The Thing is ground zero for the argument that a remake can top the original. The tale of an alien invasion taking over the bodies of a ragtag crew of researchers stationed in the frozen middle of nowhere Antarctica is truly timeless in terror.
Every single thing about Carpenter’s take, from the cast stuffed with ace character actors (Richard Masur! Keith David! Richard Dysart! Wilford freaking Brimley!!!) to Ennio Morricone’s score to the legendarily unsettling special-effects by master Rob Bottin (fresh off the werewolf transformations of The Howling) has become iconic. So who cares if four decades ago this remake summarily flopped at the box office? And that’s even before you get to fun little touches like that great big flouncy hat that Kurt Russell somehow makes work or The Fog’s radio-jockey Adrienne Barbeau voice-cameoing as the chess computer. — Jason Adams, Freelance Contributor

Tag is a fun and entertaining movie with a great cast and a unique storyline. The movie is full of laughs and will keep you entertained from start to finish. It is a perfect movie for a night of fun with friends or family.

Tales from the Loop takes place in a town built upon a facility housing a machine called the Loop that can produce strange, unexplainable phenomena.
While the Loop might be the catalyst for many of the show’s plotlines, the town’s residents are its heart. Rather than deciphering the inner workings of a fantastical machine, Tales from the Loop studies human behavior and the way people change over time.

The movie starts with Borat attempting to make peace with America by offering Kazakstan’s head of culture, a monkey named Jimmy, as a gift to Vice President Mike Pense. The monkey gets eaten en-route, and Borat improvises by offering his daughter to Pense. Yes, it gets worse – so much worse – from there.

Lost in Space is a classic sci-fi series about the Robinsons, a family that finds itself stranded in the cosmos as they try to make their way back to Earth. Rebooted in 2018 on Netflix, the 1960s Lost in Space is undoubtedly a product of its time, and it is not quite as endearing as Star Trek: The Original Series. The show is corny by any standards, but this element could be seen as a feature rather than a bug.
That said, some of the production design has aged pretty well, in the sense that it is still impressive for a budget project released during the 1960s. Huge sci-fi fans should give Lost in Space a try simply due to its legacy, and the opening two seasons are generally pretty entertaining. The quality diminishes after that point, but some fun can still be had.
