7 Coherence (2013)

A crossbreed between a psychological thriller and a sci-fi film, Coherence is what you get when filmmaking ingenuity meets budget constraints. A resourceful film that’s proof that inventive filmmakers can create a lot with little, Coherence takes place in a suburban house where friends hang out over dinner and drinks. Coinciding with the soirée is a comet that’s scheduled to pass over the country, which in turn causes things to get weird, very weird.
Shot on a shoestring budget, it’s evident that Coherence is financially malnourished, but that doesn’t take away from its creative prowess and excellent performances. As soon as the film delves into its premise, it shifts gears at an eerie pace, gluing the viewer right onto the screen.
Harpoon
Rob Grant’s Harpoon is so sarcastic, caustic, and spiteful. I say that with glee. It’s the darkest of dark comedies, cutting to the chase about humanity’s vile core. Three “friends” are stranded on a boat and devolve into the worst versions of themselves — somehow even worse than the betrayers and hotheads they were on land. There’s also a harpoon on board, hence the title. Brett Gelman narrates as Richard (Christopher Gray), Jonah (Munro Chambers), and Sasha (Emily Tyra) try to survive heatstroke, dehydration, and themselves. Drifting on waters that are much calmer than tensions aboard, which is all I want to reveal about this laugh-out-out slice of human misery.

This low-budget tale of time travel, suburban hypocrisy and a talking rabbit named Frank, tanked at the box office despite its A-list cast (which includes both Gyllenhaal siblings, Drew Barrymore and Patrick Swayze). Released shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the film was arguably doomed to fail, as audiences were craving lighter fare. But this, too, is a story of redemption, and Donnie Darko went on to recoup its budget — and then some — via word of mouth and international home video sales.
The film also introduced the world to the Gyllenhaals, and catapulted Gary Jules’ rendition of the 1982 Tears for Fears song Mad World to the top of the charts. Unfortunately, director Richard Kelly’s follow-ups Southland Tales (2006) and The Box (2009) proved that lightning doesn’t strike twice. Still, Donnie Darko is one stellar legacy, even if it was an accidental one.
The Courier

“The Courier” is a great “dad movie,” and that’s pejorative. This Cold War thriller is based on a true story and stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Greville Wynne, a British businessman who was recruited by the Secret Intelligence Service to serve as a messenger between a Russian spy source and the British government in the 1960s. What begins as an exciting romp turns deadly serious, and Cumberbatch commands the screen in the lead role (flanked by Rachel Brosnahan as his wife and Jessie Buckley as his handler). This one’s taut, compelling and surprisingly emotional. – Adam Chitwood

Once realisation dawns on them, they attempt to seek refuge in their local pub with their loved ones, with varying degrees of success.
Funny and with plenty of blood, it’s a must for comedy horror fans.

The 1975 film by Steven Spielberg sees police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) set out to capture the killer beast after it takes the life of a young woman skinny dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island.
He is joined by Ichthyologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled ship captain Quint (Robert Shaw) and the trio soon find themselves in an epic battle of man vs nature.

24. The Hunt
Lucas, a kindergarten teacher, is falsely accused of inappropriate sexual behaviour by one of the children in his care and is abruptly ostracised by the local community. Even those closest to Lucas begin to doubt his innocence, as he becomes trapped in an increasingly nightmarish situation.
It’s a dark and oftentimes gruelling exploration of some really difficult questions, but the film is engaging and Mikkelsen’s performance is never not mesmerising, keeping you at arms length and allowing for a level of doubt around the character’s true nature. It’s a tense watch which keeps you consistently on edge and is all the better for doing so.

A sequel to the horror film Candyman (1992) that returns to the now-gentrified Chicago neighborhood where the legend began.
This 2021 horror reboot/sequel comes from executive producer Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us) and is a continuation of 1992’s horror classic.
Directed by Nia DaCosta, who’s set to helm upcoming Captain Marvel sequel The Marvels, it follows Anthony McCoy, an artist living in Chicago who hears an urban legend detailing the events of the original film and the gruesome supernatural killer Candyman.
In exploring his legacy through his art, Anthony soon becomes entrapped by the same supernatural forces that surrounded Helen Lyle all those years ago.

One of the best movies of 2022, Nope is best served cold — as in to audiences with little to no understanding of what they’re about to see. Emerald / «Em» (Keke Palmer) and Otis Jr. / «OJ» (Daniel Kaluuya) run Haywood Hollywood Horses, a stunt-horse program that helps provide safe talent for movies and shows. And that might not sound scary, but something is very wrong at the Haywood Ranch.
Gorgeously shot, like all Jordan Peele movies are, Nope is an adventure that will have you asking questions all the way through. It may answer more (or fewer) of those questions than you’d like, but Nope delivers thrills and excitement, with more than a few laughs to spare. All while making you think about how we chase adrenaline and spectacle. — HC

While it may not seem like a huge amount to modern audiences, The Wizard of Oz’s $2.7m budget was nothing to scoff at in 1939, especially considering that the average Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film clocked in at a maximum of $1.5m. Generating a mere $3m at the box office, the beloved cult hit was considered a financial failure.
The slew of vitriolic reviews didn’t help, as exemplified by The New Yorker’s Russell Maloney, who wrote: “I sat cringing before MGM’s Technicolor production of The Wizard of Oz, which displays no trace of imagination, good taste, or ingenuity.” It took 10 years for this classic to become a financial success and even longer for the film to get back into the critics’ good graces.

This 2012 film starring Jennifer Lawrence is where the successful film series began.
But don’t get distracted with the thought of sequels just yet, focus solely on the gripping story of a dystopian world where two ‘tributes’ from each of the 12 districts of Panem fight to the death each year at The Hunger Games.
Despite the odds literally being stacked against them, some of the tributes find hope in the darkest of places, which delivers a powerful message in these trying times.
It also includes plenty of action, suspense and tension with a strong performance by Oscar-winner Jennifer as protagonist Katniss Everdeen.

The Big Sick

A romantic comedy straight from the heart, the based-on-a-true-story “The Big Sick” is delightful and emotional all at once. Written by Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, the film is based on the origins of their relationship as Gordon slipped into a coma soon after they started dating, and Nanjiani was forced to confront his own fears and contend with Gordon’s parents all with the uncertainty of her condition looming large. Zoe Kazan portrays Gordon in the film with a hearty dose of moxie, and Nanjiani delivers a complex performance that clearly pulls from the depths of his personal life – not just his relationship with Kazan’s character, but his own relationship to his family. – Adam Chitwood
Swarm (2023)
Co-created by Donald Glover, the psychological horror series, Swarm, takes a look at the toxic nature that is “stan” culture. The series follows Andrea, otherwise known as Dre, and her obsessive love that she has for a major pop star called Ni’Jah. But with this love that she has for the star, she is willing to do anything to meet her, even betray and kill those close to her.
As someone who has been a part of “stan” culture for various artists of the past, this show takes it to a new level of craziness and it’s something that I absolutely love. The Swarm cast is full of talent, led by an impressive performance by Dominique Fishback, and has some incredibly gory moments that will make horror movie fanatics squirm in their seats. Such a great show. The series was even nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Fishback’s killer performance.

Pyewacket
What if I told you Pyewacket is Lady Bird but for horror fans? Adam MacDonald tells a tale of overly emotional teens and black magic, leading to consequences you can’t reverse. Leah (Nicole Muñoz) is furious at her mother (Laurie Holden) for angsty juvenile reasons, so she summons a witch to kill mama in a fit of rage — it’s the ultimate commentary on kids wishing ill on their parents without understanding words have meaning. Strap in for a few primo scares and emotionally-driven storytelling that balances on a tightrope, all-in on Nicole’s frantic mission to undo what she’s wished upon an evil star. Well acted, well told, and well worth your time.

Every new Paul Thomas Anderson movie is reason to celebrate, but his 2021 film “Licorice Pizza” is truly one from the heart. The coming-of-age dramedy takes place in 1973 in the San Fernando Valley and follows a cocksure 15-year-old actor (Cooper Hoffman) who strikes up a friendship with a girl in her 20s (Alana Haim). The film navigates their nebulous relationship as well as the anxieties felt by each as they stare down young adulthood, and it’s all wrapped up in PTA’s hilarious and heartbreaking chronicle of life as a kid in 1970s Los Angeles. Come for the time capsule, stay for Bradley Cooper’s hilariously unhinged performance as producer Jon Peters. – Adam Chitwood

Jordan Peele’s latest movie following his smash hit Get Out, Nope is a science fiction horror thriller that stars Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer as siblings who believe they’ve seen a UFO, along with unexplained rains of metal objects and strangely persistent clouds.
Nope is full of twists and turns, as strange events begin to enfold the siblings’ horse ranch and a local Wild West show. It functions well as both a solid scary movie and a commentary on how some audiences are addicted to spectacle even at their own expense. With tragic and quietly brilliant characters, Nope has a lot of depth beneath its sci-fi thriller surface.
We Are Still Here
Haunted houses are part of any horror fan’s comfort formula but can present storytelling problems. Why remain in an estate that aims to harm you? Or possess your family? Ted Geoghegan’s We Are Still Here works as a New England ghost story because characters played by Barbara Crampton and Andrew Sensenig believe their new abode’s strange occurrences are signs from their deceased son. A calmness keeps them settled until their assumptions are proven very, disastrously wrong. It’s a third-act for the ages that pays off slower burns when Geoghegan unleashes more bloodshed in its closing remarks than some entire movies accomplish. Eat your hearts out, A24. Here’s how you sustain elongated simmers with a proper climax.
Inglourious Basterds

Quentin Tarantino’s reimagining of WWII is a gritty, blood-soaked adventure that’s equal parts morbid and hopeful. The film follows Brad Pitt and his horrific fake Italian accent as the charismatic leader of a fearless band of Nazi-hunters and Mélanie Laurent as a Jewish cinema owner with a vendetta. However, it’s Christoph Waltz’s Oscar-winning portrayal of a chillingly charismatic Nazi colonel that steals the show. This flick is classic Tarantino through and through, but if we’re watching Nazis get what they deserve, you already know it’s going to be a good time.

Желая исследовать мир за морем, Ариэль отправляется на поверхность, где издалека влюбляется в лихого принца Эрика (Иона Хауэр-Кинг). Несмотря на то, что ей запрещено общаться с людьми, Ариэль заключает сделку со злой морской ведьмой Урсулой (Мелисса Маккарти), чтобы позволить ей какое-то время пожить на суше… за определенную плату.
