I’m literally the opposite, I’ve never . Do you know the friends who are just unapologetic about it or have said, “I found the love of my life” and you’re like, “Oh my God, where? Where did you meet him?” and they’re like, “Online”? I love people like that because they do it and they actually do find amazing moments, or sometimes love. But then there’s the other group that is shy about admitting to it, or they have a lot of depressing moments through it. When you hear both sides, I think it’s so scary, the whole thing. And also, I didn’t grow up with a phone. So to start doing that now, I would laugh at myself.
Do you follow along with the memes, tweets, and reactions too?
No, because I’ve learned—again, luckily, because I came late to social media and everything. I know from the way I am; I think we all are vulnerable to that.
I was in my first film, I remember I learned my lesson. I read reviews and I remember they were all great. And then there was one that wasn’t. And that’s the only one I remembered. I can’t remember the others and, you know, it hurts you. And so I think it was by the time I grew up understanding that, when social media came along, I was like, “Oh no, no, I’m not gonna , I’m not the one who’s good at that.” So I tend not to.
I was talking to Michael Patrick King about the show and the reactions. And we were both saying what is amazing is how much talk there is. Like, every time I open my phone, there’s something about the show. And whether it’s good one day or bad the next day or whatever it is, you’re like, “Thank God it’s so alive at this point.” Because imagine if there was no talk; that would also be a problem.

Choudhury, who was born to be an actress, rose to prominence after her debut film, Mississippi Masala, a romantic comedy in which she played Meena alongside co-star Denzel Washington, became a huge hit. Aside from the film, Choudhary is well-known for her role as Tara in the erotic historical drama Kama Sutra: The Tale of Love, in which she co-starred with Indira Verma.

Career
Choudhury starred opposite Denzel Washington in the 1990 film Mississippi Masala, for which she received her Screen Actors Guild (SAG) card. She was still working as a waitress in Manhattan’s East Village to make ends meet while the film was in theaters. After her debut film Mississippi Masala became an art house hit, Sarita Choudhury acted as a Pakistani country-western singer in Wild West (1992), a Chilean maid who is raped in Bille August’s adaptation of The House of the Spirits, and a lesbian mother in Fresh Kill.
Choudhury appeared on Homicide: Life on the Street for five episodes during the 1998–99 season as Dr. Kalyani, a medical examiner. Choudhury played the role of the King’s mistress, Helen Pardis, in the NBC drama Kings. The series was based upon the Biblical story of King David but set in modern times. Her character’s Biblical counterpart was Rizpah, a concubine of King Saul.
She worked with independent film director Sona Jain in For Real. In an interview with The Statesman she said, «After Mississippi Masala and Kama Sutra I started getting offers in New York… doing theatres… I just went with the flow. One fine day, I thought that I haven’t been back to India, haven’t shot there and that’s something I wanted to. There were Bollywood offers but it was not until Sona’s script that made me look at India.» The film had a commercial release in September 2010.
She appears as character Saul Berenson’s wife, Mira in the TV series Homeland.
In 2011, she appeared in the joint British/French TV series Death in Paradise. Choudhury also had a brief cameo the 2013 comedy Admission. She appeared in the films The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1 (2014) and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2 (2015), as President Snow’s assistant, Egeria. In 2015, she appears as the Deputy White House Political Director Sophia Varma in the American crime drama Blindspot.

Partly. I mean, literally, I see the headline and if it’s not that nice, I’m like, “Okay, well, at least we’re the subject of this week,” but part of my brain does that, and the other part is like, “Do not open it, Sarita, do not open it.” Because you know what else I learned? An odd thing. Sometimes when I did look at a few, I was like, “Oh, the ones with the harshest titles are actually not that mean and some of the ones with the nicer titles then get mean later.” So I thought, Aha, very tricky here.

Sarita Choudhury Got Married To A War Photographer
Speaking to DNA India back in the day, Sarita, on the other hand, revealed a little bit about her personal life to her interviewer. Without revealing much, the hesitant Homeland actress revealed that she is married to an outsider, a man of a different profession.
In fact, Sarita Choudhury’s husband is a war photographer who also happens to be the father of her child. With his father being the source of her daughter’s blond hair, it’s pretty clear that Choudhury’s husband is white.
Maria once appeared in an interview with her mother when she was seven years old. As she sat on her mother’s lap, the interracial child looked absolutely stunning, her eyes resembling Sarita’s.

Concurrently, in 2018, Sarita was seen in “Instinct” and “Strangers”, followed by her role as Kith Lyonne in the 2019 series “Jessica Jones”, and was then seen as Seema Patel in the romantic comedy-drama “And Just Like That…” (2021-2022), a spin-off from the hit series “Sex and the City”.
Most recently, in 2022, Sarita appeared as Olivia in three episodes of the series “Ramy”.
You mentioned how Seema was lying to her parents about having a man. What did you make of her family criticizing her for not being married or pressuring her into being married?
Well, first of all, if you’re an Indian daughter, which I am, that would be the narrative. Like, you’re not supposed to have boyfriends when you’re not married, and then you’re supposed to be married. So it’s almost like, when does that change and why am I always lying about one or the other? You know what I mean? When you’re not allowed a boyfriend, that’s when you lie about having one, you say you don’t . And then suddenly you’re supposed to be married. So the narrative, I related to it completely, but again, what I love is Seema’s just like, “Yeah, I had to lie—for them more than for me, or for them and for me.”
Career
Her acting career started when Mira Nair, an Indian-American filmmaker, spotted her as she auditioned for ‘Mississippi Masala in 199. She ended up getting the role of Mina, a transplanted Indian woman in the interracial romance film.
She played alongside Denzel Washington, who played the role of a Southern African American man. The movie was an instant hit and earned her the Screen Actors Guild Card. Sarita was, however, still working in Manhattan’s East Village as a waitress as the film hit the theaters.
She also maintained her non-Hollywood roots and kept her exotic looks, which earned her a role in the 1992 film ‘Wild West as a Pakistani country-western singer. She also appeared in ‘The House of the Spirits’ in 1993 as a Chilean maid and ‘Fresh Kill’ in 1994 as a lesbian mother.
In 1995, she starred in one of her other significant movies, ‘The Perez Family,’ directed by Mira Nair, the Mississippi Masala director. The following year, she appeared in ‘Kama Sutra: A Tale of love,’ where she played Tara, the cuckolded queen.
Sarita Choudhury appeared on five episodes of ‘Homicide: Life on the Street’ from 1998 to 1999, in which her role was Dr. Layani, a medical examiner. Over the two years, she also had other supporting roles in ‘A Perfect Murder’ in 1998, ‘Restless’ in 1998, and ‘Remake Gloria’ in 1999.
In 2001, she got another significant role in ‘100 Centre Street’, a drama, where she played Julia Brooks. In the same year, she appeared in ‘3 a.m.,’ directed by Lee Davis, and a year later, she appeared in ‘Just a Kiss.’
In 2004 actress Sarita Choudhury featured in ‘It Runs in the Family.’ One of her major works of the year was ‘She Hates Me,’ directed by Spike Lee, where she played the role of a lesbian virgin.
In 2006, Sarita Choudhury was featured in ‘The Lady in the Water’ and in 2008, she was in ‘The Accidental husband. In 2009, she appeared in ‘For Real’ directed by Sona Jain, an independent film director.
Actress Sarita Choudhury said that since she appeared in her first movie, she got many offers to star in films based in New York and other countries. While she went with the flow, she said it had been long since she shot a movie in India, which drew her to accept the character in Sona Jain’s film.
In the same year, she got one of her most significant roles. She appeared in the NBC drama ‘Kings,’ where she played Helen Pardis, the king’s mistress. The film was based on King David’s Biblical story set in modern times, and Rizpah was her Biblical counterpart who played King Saul’s concubine.
In the same year, she appeared in ‘Entre nos,’ a flick in which she played Preet. Shortly after, she appeared in the television series ‘Homeland’ as Mira, Berenson’s wife. In 2011, Sarita Choudhury appeared in ‘Death in Paradise,’ a joint British/French television series, and ‘Azaan.’
In 2013, she appeared in ‘Admission’ in a short cameo and played Indira Gandhi in ‘Midnight’s children.’ Soon, she was approached to appear in ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, which she accepted and got the role of Egeria in parts one and two, released in 2014 and 2015.
She was later cast in ‘Blindsop,’ a drama series, from 2015 to 2016 as Sophia Varma, the Deputy White House Political Director. In 2016, she also co-starred in ‘A Hologram for the king,’ alongside Tom Hanks. In 2020, she became a supporting actor in ‘Here Comes Frieda.’
Sarita’s latest project was HBO Max’s revival TV series ‘Sex and The City,’ in which she plays Seema Patel, a Manhattan powerhouse real estate broker. In 2021, she also appeared in ‘The Green Knight.’
