4 DBZ Episode 13: Goz and Mez

Fighterz is one of the great tag-team fighting games, and teamwork is needed for this dramatic finish. Essentially following the same beats as in the final moments of the Tournament of Power, Goku and Frieza use everything they have left in order to defeat Jiren.

The only difference with this version is the Universe seven combatants don’t drag Jiren out of the ring as there aren’t any ring-outs in Fighterz. Instead, the uneasy allies cause a giant explosion that defeats Jiren. The moment is just as effective, especially with the show of respect Goku gives his opponent at the end.

2 DBS Episode 70: A Challenge From Champa! This Time, a Baseball Game!

Sometimes, proper levity and downtime is even better than action-packed thrills. Earth’s mightiest warriors, alien princes and actual deities are roped into a game of baseball, and it’s just as hilarious as it sounds in concept. The episode is also a much-needed highlight episode for Yamcha, who has been further pushed to the sidelines since the early days of Dragon Ball Z.

This fantastic sports outing pays homage to the infamous Yamcha death pose, but delivers on having the mainstay character getting his time to shine again after years of seeming irrelevance. When Dragon Ball does comedy right, the outcome is always a joy.

7. Duel on a Vanishing Planet (DBZ ep. 102)

It’s an ongoing joke within the Dragon Ball Z fandom that the final battle between Goku and Frieza took an obscenely long time and so it isn’t exactly a surprise that some of those episodes were entirely comprised of filler in order to elongate the epic scrap. One episode fans may be surprised to learn falls into this category, however, is ‘Duel on a Vanishing Planet’.

The episode features plenty of action from the climax of Goku and Frieza’s fight with both warriors near full power and the characters pull off some big attacks, including Frieza’s impressive Death Ball. But by far the most significant part of the episode comes in the form of some serious character development for Vegeta. Upon being informed that Goku would die in the explosion of Namek, Vegeta shows some respect for his kinsman’s decision to stay behind. Of course, he’s also pleased to be rid of the man who stood in his way of intergalactic domination but nevertheless, this moment is one of the first examples of the duo’s future friendship.

#5 The End of Vegeta

Gohan, Krillin, and Piccolo watch as Vegeta takes hit after hit from Frieza in an epic battle. When Goku finally shows up, Frieza immediately recognizes him as the son of Bardock, who was the last Saiyan to challenge him. 

But Goku isn’t swayed by Frieza at all and starts to confront him, moving closer and closer. Taken back, Frieza decides to take a drastic next step and blasts Vegeta in retaliation. With his last few breaths, Vegeta pleads with Goku to finish Frieza and show no mercy. 

What makes this episode epic: Vegeta’s origin story is revealed in his last breathes in an eye-opening telling of extortion and murder, thus prompting Goku to avenge Vegeta and put an end to Freiza once and for all.

6. The Garlic Jr. Saga (DBZ eps. 108-117)

Watching Dragon Ball Z’s Garlic Jr. material for the first time and with no knowledge of the manga, it certainly doesn’t come across like the standard filler episode dross. In fact, Garlic Jr. and his spice-based henchmen appear in an extended run within the series as well as the Dead Zone movie and therefore have a lot more screen time than most stand-in villains manage.

The Garlic Jr. saga has critical merit too, primarily because it’s one of the rare instances where the Z Warriors battle without the help of their leader Goku. Moreover, some of these filler episodes have become fan favorites. Who could forget Goku and Piccolo’s hilarious attempts at getting their driver’s licenses? Or the otherworldly tournament that pits Goku and Pikkon against warriors from other quadrants of the universe? While not contributing directly to the main story, these episodes add memorable moments to the series that have charmed fans for years.

However, if you prefer sticking strictly to the main storyline, want to save time, or simply find the shift in pace or tone during these fillers jarring, skipping them might be a better option.

Can I skip DBZ and watch DBS?

Ah, the classic “skip ahead” dilemma!

Goku, who is now in Ginyu’s body, does what he can to catch up to Jeice and Ginyu, who are in Goku’s body. 

What makes this episode epic: Mind-blowing battles and a body-switch technique that alters the course of Goku’s fate for episodes to come.

8 DBS Episode 69: Goku Vs. Arale! An Off-the-Wall Battle Spells The End Of The Earth?!

A mouthful of an episode, but befitting the comedic and outlandish intentions this episode delivers. A recurring gag in Dragon Ball that has cropped up a handful of times are cameos and references to Dr. Slump, another series created by Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama. The child super-robot Arale goes berserk at a science fair and ends up mopping the floor with most of the main cast, Vegeta included, and gets into a fight with Goku that builds up enough energy to threaten the existence of the earth.

Yes, really. A small school girl that is secretly a robot almost destroyed the earth and Dragon Balls’ primary cast of characters, and the whole thing is a comedic in-joke that most viewers won’t even understand. Sometimes cutting loose and going nuts is the best way to ease tensions in a long-running action-drama.

7 «The Puzzle of General Tao» (Episode 174)

Everyone has to start from somewhere. Fans often downplay the fact that there was once a time where even regular humans like Yamcha or Tien posed a serious threat to Goku’s life. Going into Dragon Ball Z, the only real challenges that he would face came from aliens or artificial lifeforms. Back in Dragon Ball Z, General Tao was an assassin who almost killed Goku on one occasion, and struck fear into the young Saiyan’s heart with his battle prowess. In this episode, the roles were flipped as Super Saiyan Goku invades a mob fortress without breaking a sweat and takes the Dragon Balls from General Tao without much resistance at all. This episode shows fans where exactly Tao went after the events of Dragon Ball, and serves as the realization for many fans that Goku has surpassed any threats that any Earthling can throw at him (unless the threat is a rock thrown by Krillin).

How Many Episodes Does It Have?

Anime Series

The first Dragonball series had 153 episodes, which succeeded with the 291 episodes from Dragonball Z, from 1986 to 1996. All were adaptations from Akira Toriyama’s Manga Series, Dragonball. The success of the anime led to another series. This time, it is Dragonball GT. It came out with 64 episodes but not based on the original Manga Series. 

What came next is a continuation to the manga (2) adaptation with 131 episodes, Dragonball Super. In commemoration of this anime’s 20th and 25th anniversaries, Dragonball Z Kai was created, and it was a revision of DBZ, which ran for a total of 167 episodes.

Movies/Films

The anime started in 1984, but the first film about it was shown in 1986, entitled Dragonball. Two more Dragonball films were shown after that in 1987 and 1988. From 1989 until 1995, there were a total of 13 Dragonball Z films released during this period. And in 1996, another film was released for the 10th anniversary of Dragonball. 

One thing in common among all these films apart from the title is that these are animated. There was only one live-action film released, Dragonball: Evolution, which remains the only licensed live-action film.

Manga

From December 1984 until June 1995, there were 519 individual chapters released with 42 volumes. Dragonball has 153 episodes shown, while the succeeding Dragonball Z had 291 in total, which concluded in January of 1996. What followed next was Dragonball GT which had 64 episodes aired, and Dragonball Super had 131 episodes. The last series is Super Dragon Ball Heroes, which has a total of 38 episodes only.
