Shiver by Junji Ito
The stories in this Junji Ito manga collection are all unique and separate from one another; they show off the depth and breadth of Ito’s artistic and narrative talents to an astonishing degree.
A personal favourite from these horror manga short stories is, perhaps, Hanging Balloons. This story imagines a world invaded by enormous balloons, each one with the face of a real person. Your balloon stalks you, a noose hanging from its bottom, and if it catches you, it hangs you.
Another story, The Long Dream, shows us a man in a hospital bed who lives entire lives every time he dreams. When he wakes, his body has aged as well, eventually turning him into an impossibly ancient, horrifyingly morphed thing.
These really are the best of Junji Ito, and Shiver is one of the best horror manga collections ever published. It’s a great introduction into Ito’s oeuvre and the world of horror manga in general.
MPD Psycho
Eiji Otsuka and Shouu Tajima – MPD Psycho
MPD Psycho by Eji Otsuka and Shouu Tajima is a complex psychological manga featuring copious amounts of shocking imagery.
It’s the story of a detective named Kazuhiko Amamiya who suffers from multiple personality disorder. Over the course of the first chapters, we witness as Amamiya investigates various sick murder cases.
In time, however, it turns into a truly weird manga when a complex, at times confusing, overarching plot is introduced. This plot is not only related to Amamiya, but various other characters and involves an ominous woman known as Lucy Monostone.
Eiji Otsuka and Shouu Tajima – MPD Psycho
While the manga is full of shocking imagery, it’s also a highly psychological thriller.
What makes it such a weird manga is not only the plot but also Amamiya’s unique condition. While the manga’s always interesting and full of suspense, keeping up with his different personalities and their aims can be hard.
Even though I enjoyed this manga. It’s a sick, twisted and dark manga, but it features one of the most complex and interesting plots I’ve come upon. If you’re a fan of weird manga and dark thrillers, read MPD Psycho.

You Will Hear the Voice of the Dead— это уникальная манга, в которой комедии из жизни мастерски сочетаются с одними из самых тревожных ужасов в этой среде, приподнятыми великолепным, но бесконечно тревожным художественным стилем.
Ajin: Demi-Human by Gamon Sakurai
Ajin is another fairly popular horror manga, in part because of its 3D anime adaptation (the manga is better, though). An Ajin is an immortal demi-human, and our protagonist Kei discovers that he is one of these when he survives being hit by a truck. From here, Kei’s world changes forever.
Another power of Ajin is the ability to summon black ghosts to fight for them (think Stands in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure). Ajin, being unkillable and dangerous, are hunted mercilessly by government entities that wish to experiment on them. One escapee from these government facilities is Sato, an Ajin who has vowed to help other Ajin, but who is also far more (and far worse) than he first appears.
Can You Just Die, My Darling? – by Majuro Kaname
Can You Die, My Darling? is like a mixed bag of romance, horror, mystery, and thriller while maintaining a fine balance. It has plenty of blood lust and a few dashes of gore. Romance goes awry as love turns into an obsession to kill the beloved. Add to this a mysterious illness and some superhuman powers, and voila! This horror manga follows the characters as they try to uncover the mysteries behind the abnormalities while dealing with their bloodlust. Sanity and rationality come into question as they battle or give in to their murderous impulses while plagued by similar delusions. As they say, “love kills’, the manga gives a new meaning to the saying! All in all, it sets up for some intrigue that won’t leave you disappointed. It is one hell of a rollercoaster ride that you wouldn’t want to get off from!

Venus In The Blind Spot
Zankyou no Terror (Terror in Resonance)
On a hot summer day, A massive terrorist bomb detonated Tokyo. The perpetrators of the act that jolted this slumbering nation were two young boys. The culprits, now known as Sphinx, launch a massive game that engulfs Japan. Terrorism is a hot topic in today’s world, and nothing puts it into perspective like fiction. Zankyou no Terror is a dark anime that explores the nature vs. nurture debate through the eyes of its “protagonists,” who struggle for individual identity and recognition in a world hell-bent on burying its mistakes. They accomplish this by instilling fear, terrorism, and chaos. There are no “good guys” or “bad guys,” and it does an excellent job of skewing right and wrong in the face of justice. It is one of the top dark manga of all time.
6 Fraction
1 Volume, 12 Chapters
Any refined horror manga fan is familiar with the insanity-driven works of Shintaro Kago, an infamous master of the bizarre and grotesque ero-guro genre. His mesmerizing, unpredictable, and violent tales are notorious for their eroticized gore, incomprehensive storytelling, and terrifyingly insightful meta-commentary on manga as a form of artistic expression. Beyond being a gruesome serial killer story, Shintaro’s eponymous manga Fraction is a surrealistic experience. This work throws readers’ expectations out the window and cunningly plays with form and content to create something unorthodox and terrifying.

Dorohedoro by Q Hayashida
Thrust into the spotlight by its Netflix adaptation (which is also really fantastic and beautifully realised), Dorohedoro is a gritty, grimy, nasty smash hit of a horror manga.
Set in a twisted, dangerous, post-apocalyptic world, Dorohedoro follows the reptilian Caiman, a man who has lost his memory. Caiman lives in a shanty city known as the Hole.
Believing himself transformed from his human state by a sorcerer, Caiman — along with his friend Nikaido — hunts down one sorcerer after another in the hopes of tracking down the one that transformed him and took his memories.
Dorohedoro is an oppressive, violent world full of death, gore, and crime. It is oppressive, grimy, and thrilling. This atmosphere is captured splendidly by Q Hayashida’s detailed and elaborate artwork, creating a wholly original and gross horror manga.

Freesia
Jiro Matsumoto – Freesia
Freesia is the second manga by Jiro Matsumoto and it’s an even weirder manga than Keep on Vibrating, yet for different reasons.
It’s set in a dark, dystopian version of Japan where a law is passed which legalizes retaliatory killings. Should a loved ones be murdered, you may take justice into your own hands, or hire someone who does it for you.
Kano, our protagonist, works for an agency which specializes in retaliatory killings. One might assume Freesia’s a bloody manga about retaliatory killings, but it focuses more on the personal stories of the targets than action. This makes us sympathize with them, and their end a tragedy in its own right.
Freesia’s Japan is a dark, gloomy place, one filled with a perpetual feeling of depression. It’s a story that’s populated by nothing but broken, damaged and mentally ill people.
Jiro Matsumoto – Freesia
This is more than true for Kano. He suffers from schizophrenia, hallucination and memory failure. What makes Freesia such a weird manga is how it presents this to us. We don’t merely see how Kano acts. Instead, the manga shows us the world he sees. It’s a surreal world, one that makes no sense and makes us wonder just what we’re seeing.
Yet, Kano isn’t the only member of our cast who suffers from mental problems. Many others seem to suffer from delusions of their own. Similar to Kano, these are presented to us as real and it can often cause confusion. It’s only when we understand what’s going on that things become clear to us.
Freesia is a brilliant work, one that showcases mental illness different from any other manga I’ve read. It makes it a surreal, irritating and weird manga, but also one I loved reading.
Zashiki Onna/ Phantom Stalker Woman – by Minetaro Mochizuki
Zashiki Onna is a manga that is far more relevant in the present times than ever before. It follows the story of a young lad getting stalked by a creepy lady. The series does a wonderful job building up horror as readers find themselves in the protagonist’s shoes. The fear of the unknown, not knowing what lies ahead, the suspense, it all builds up. Ultimately impacting the protagonist and the readers alike as they try to escape the grasps of paranoia. The creepy illustrations add to the thrill and fear. Did you know that this series was published much before stalking was a serious concern? The realism and plausibility of the series’ events are what makes it far more terrifying! An addictive plot reeking of suspense from the start is what this horror manga is!
Tomie
Probably Ito’s most famous creation, the stunningly beautiful Tomie was murdered by her classmates only to reappear the next day. Since then she’s been terrorizing readers and lovestruck men for years. There’s a collected edition of Tomie tales where you can read her story from her earliest to most recent appearances, and each one is more delightfully dark than the last. Her ever shifting true face is the thing of nightmares, but Ito’s striking illustration style has also made her a perennial pop culture figure.
Even if you’ve never read an Ito story, you’ve likely already seen Tomie as a sticker, tattoo, or t-shirt. Ironically, in her stories it’s near impossible to catch her beauty in an image unless you want to see her true face too.
Mirai Nikki

Ultra Heaven
Keiichi Koike – Ultra Heaven
Reading Ultra Heaven was an experience like no other. It’s a psychedelic manga and one of the most stunning works in the entire medium.
The manga’s set in a dystopian future. In this world, feelings can be artificially created and be consumed as drugs.
Kabu, our protagonist, is addicted to these types of drugs. Before long, however, he learns of a new illegal substance, one called Ultra Heaven. When a man offers to sell it to him, Kabu accepts.
What follows is one of the craziest, most creative depictions of a trip I’ve ever seen. The visuals, the art and the presentation are unlike anything I’ve ever witnessed.
What makes Ultra Heaven such a great, but also weird manga, is the art. We’re presented with a gritty setting and detailed characters, but that’s not what makes it special. It’s the way it showcases drug usage and the hallucinations that come with it.
Keiichi Koike – Ultra Heaven
Most manga are presented by usage of organized, rectangular panels. Not so Ultra Heaven. No, it breaks this convention entirely. When Kabu suffers from an altered mind, be it by drugs or later meditation, the shapes of panels distort, similar to his mental state. Organized panels turn into twisting spirals, start running into each other or become nothing but pure chaos. It gives the entire manga a disorienting, surreal, and almost crazy feeling, but perfectly showcases what’s going on.
While the first and second chapter are weird enough, things go absolutely crazy in the third chapter. Before, the manga focused on drugs, drug usage and the resulting trips. In chapter three, the manga focuses on meditation and the mind altering effect it can have.
Ultra Heaven is a manga like no other. It’s without a doubt an incredibly weird manga, but also a visual masterpiece.
Zero – Kage Miko – by Amagi Seimaru
Ranked next on our list of horrors is a spin-off series based on the Fatal Frame game series. While set in the same universe as the game series, there is little relation to any games’ events. There are some minor changes in the lore and other aspects of the game. But nothing too alarming for the games’ fans. Speaking of alarming, the artwork and the panels on each page will surely send shivers down your spine. While the story itself offers little in terms of bone-chilling horror, it is still a highly recommended treatment for the Fatal Frame game fans or any video game player in general. And for the others, give it a shot if the realm of the paranormal horror does tickle your fancy!
2 Uzumaki
3 Volumes, 19 Chapters
All around the world, Junji Ito’s name is synonymous with masterful body horror, unique and frightening art, and brilliantly immersive storytelling. The true legend of the horror genre, Ito has created myriads of unforgettable stories of gore and terror. Ito’s most famous work, Uzumaki, remains the gold standard of horror manga. This gradual, suspenseful tale of madness takes something as mundane and unassuming as spirals and turns them into a source of fear and madness. Uzumaki is a haunting, paranoia-induced dive into insanity, exemplifying the genius of its creator brilliantly.
Devilman
Go Nagai – Devilman
Go Nagai’s Devilman was released in the early seventies and is the oldest manga on this list. It’s a strange dark tale and one of the weirdest manga I ever came upon.
The manga tells the story of Akira Fudou. After his friend Ryo Asuka learns of the existence of demons and the danger they present, he hatches a plan. He reasons that a human with a good heart might not only be able to control the demon possessing them, but might also use its power to fight them. The plan succeeds, Akira becomes possessed by the powerful demon Amon and can now transform into Devilman.
Given its premise, one might assume Devilman to be a simple, straightforward manga, but it’s much, much weirder. It centers on a variety of topics and soon shows that not only demons can commit evil.
Go Nagai – Devilman
The story of Devilman is weird. The tone and themes change markedly throughout the manga. While it starts off simple, the plot goes completely overboard in its later half. It’s a strange, beautiful mess that’s all over the place. It makes it almost apparent that even Go Nagai wasn’t sure what he wanted Devilman to be.
The weakest point of the manga is the art. It’s old-fashioned and cartoony. While this strange style can shine in certain regards, it’s never truly good.
In the end, Devilman is a weird manga, one of the weirdest I ever came upon. For all its faults, however, I still consider it a classic, one any manga fan should read.

The Mystery of the Haunted House
The arrival of a haunted house turns a town upside down when derision turns to terror as each new visitor enters its doors. Two young boys become entangled in the proprietor’s twisted games after they try to sneak in for free. Upon exploring the ghoulish halls they discover a true house of horrors, one filled with victims who claim to be the owner’s family.
There’s a dark comedy to this one, which comes from another of Ito’s recurring characters, the scheming creeper Souichi Tsujii. But there’s nothing funny about his heinous crimes. The Mystery of the Haunted House is a wild ride that will delight fans of haunt culture.
Uzumaki
Likely the most famous of Ito’s many works, Uzumaki has been deemed a classic for a reason. Weaving a supernatural curse into a ghost story that centers around a small town, Kurouzu-cho, which is haunted not by spirits but instead by spirals, this is a uniquely spooky tale. It also helps that Ito’s distinctive linework does an epic job of making the usually unassuming shapes into something utterly terrifying.
Uzumaki features many of Ito’s favorite themes like obsession, paranoia, and the mundane becoming utterly bizarre. The impact of Uzumaki cannot be overstated. Not only is it his most well known tale but there’s been two video games, a live action movie, and an in-production anime all adapted from the spiral-horror of Ito’s story.
Mieruko-chan by Tomoki Izumi
I said in the intro that I would include some horror comedy manga, and Mieruko-chan is exactly what I was talking about. I’ve also mentioned how many manga live and die on their visual design — especially in the monster department — and once again, that’s true here.
Tomoki Izumi’s Mieruko-chan has a simple but endlessly fun and charming premise: its protagonist, Miko, can see ghosts (really horrifying ones, too). The twist is that she is (nearly) the only one, and so her tactic for dealing with them is to ignore them.
The ghosts of Mieruko-chan are easily provoked into becoming hostile if they notice that a human can see them. For this reason, Miko must behave like she cannot see them at all, in order to survive amongst them.
This leads to a darkly humorous story, populated by really gruesome and twisted monsters. The juxtaposition of slice-of-life story and spine-tingling monster design is wonderfully effective, making Mieruko-chan a very fun and memorable horror manga.
Read More: Why Mieruko-chan is a must-read manga
Chainsaw Man by Tatsuki Fujimoto
Chainsaw Man is one of the biggest breakout shounen manga of recent years. The way it has captivated readers cannot be overstated. However, categorising Chainsaw Man can be surprisingly difficult. It’s a shounen manga, but one graphic and monstrous enough to be classified as seinen (depending on your sensibilities). And, of course, it’s also horror.
Tatsuki Fujimoto has made it abundantly clear that he loves the horror genre, and that he also wishes to push boundaries and create something wholly original out of the pieces that inspire him. And that’s just what Chainsaw Man is.
It’s a shounen tale of a down-and-out teenager gathering his power, learning to be good, and doing brave things. But Chainsaw Man is also a horror manga, infused with grotesque imagery, plenty of body horror, gallons of blood, and themes of death, loss, fear, and trauma.
While Chainsaw Man may not frighten readers in the way that Junji Ito’s manga does, it’s a manga with horror in its DNA. It celebrates blood and gore, and it isn’t afraid to make the reader feel lost and lonely and scared from time to time.
Toilet-bound Hanako-kun by Aidalro
If you prefer the idea of a horror-themed shounen manga over an out-and-out terrifying horror manga, this is the one for you. Similar in some ways to the classic shounen manga Soul Eater in its aesthetics and art, Toilet-bound Hanako-kun is a playful and charming supernatural comedy with horror themes and few twisted things peppered in.
The titular Hanako is a yokai or “supernatural” that haunts the girls’ bathroom in a Japanese high school. One day, our protagonist Nene-chan summons him with the hopes of being granted a wish: for her crush to fall for her.
This doesn’t go according to plan; in fact, Nene is turned into a fish for her trouble and almost stolen away by a monstrous fish creature — a twisted and frightening bastardisation of the mermaid myth. Rescued and sworn into the service of Hanako, the two of them (along with an exorcist named Kou) stumble upon a series of supernatural shenanigans together.
This is horror-tinged supernatural comedy at its finest; a great choice of horror manga for people who love Halloween aesthetics but don’t fancy actually being scared by their manga.
MoMo the Blood Taker by Akira Sugito
Mikogami Keiko is a police detective in his late thirties. Ten years ago, the woman he loved was killed and her head stolen. For a decade, he has followed the trail of bloody murders across Japan in the hope of finding the one who did it, and eventually that trail leads to a man with two faces: a deadly and powerful vampire.
Consumed by wrath, blinded by revenge, and with little care left for his own life, Mikogami faces the vampire, only to learn that he has been toyed with all this time. Everything was by the vampire’s design. In the fight, Mikogami loses both of his arms and then his life, only to be saved and revived by a two-hundred-year-old vampire girl named MoMo Persephone Draculia.
In saving the detective, however, MoMo has also turne him into a demi-vampire, and she declares that he must now live and serve as her underling.
MoMo the Blood Taker leans on some very tiresome manga tropes when it comes to the male gaze and its depiction of female characters. (Be prepared for that “she looks like a child and is uncomfortably sexualised by its ok because she’s actually hundreds of years old” trope). However, the manga’s monster designs are wonderfully imaginative and its horror moments are jarringly impactful, making for a very fun horror manga romp.
2 Parasyte
Doflamingo
Manga: One Piece
Doflamingo from One Piece will take sixth place in this list. Doflamingo was a former member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea and also the captain of the Donquixote Pirates. He was the most influential underworld broker, a former Celestial Dragon, and former king of Dressrosa.
Doflamingo is the most complicated One Piece character so far. He is arrogant, prideful, intelligent, and jovial. His powers of puppetry also perfectly exemplify his personality of having everything under his control. Doflamingo-Corazon’s story also gives an insight into the debate of nature vs nurture in shaping one’s character. The only issue with him is he didn’t have the intimidating factor when his role as an antagonist came in Dressrosa.
