If you’re completely new to Neon Genesis Evangelion, you might get confused with the watching order. There’s a trilogy of movies, a 26-episode TV show, and a pseudo lead into the End of Evangelion – Death and Rebirth.
So, what should you watch first?
The safest “route” would be to watch the content in the order it came out. Going from the oldest to the newest release, your watch order should look like this:
- Neon Genesis Evangelion (episodes 1 to 26).
- Death and Rebirth.
- End of Evangelion.
- Evangelion 1.0 – You Are (Not) Alone.
- Evangelion 2.0 – You Can (Not) Advance.
- Evangelion 3.0 – You Can (Not) Redo.
- Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0 (available in 2020).
However, Neon Genesis Evangelion’s fans consider this the best watching route:
- Neon Genesis Evangelion (episodes 1 to 23).
- Neon Genesis Evangelion Episode 24 Director’s Cut.
- Neon Genesis Evangelion Episode 25 Director’s Cut.
- Neon Genesis Evangelion Episode 26 Director’s Cut or regular episode 26.
- End of Evangelion.
As you can see, Death and Rebirth and the movie trilogy, are not on the list. That’s because Death and Rebirth are not that essential to the main story. When it comes to the movies, they are excluded from the list as they retell the original Neon Genesis Evangelion story with some crucial differences. They are considered remakes of the original story arc.

After Earth was destroyed by an alien race known as the Gauna, humanity fled across the galaxy in giant seed ships looking for a new home. After being discovered, he finds himself dragged into the military just in time for a Gauna attack and discovers that he may just be the hero that the Sidonia needs.
Like Neon Genesis Evangelion, the focus of Knights of Sidonia is on character development rather than mech battles. That being said, when mechs do battle, they are both fighting an enemy that they don’t understand, but is gradually unraveled throughout the series.
Guilty Crown
After being ravaged by the Apocalypse Virus, Japan has fallen under control of the GHQ, an independent military force dedicated to the restoration of order. However, a guerrilla group called Funeral Parlor seeks to put an end to their despotism. After a fateful run in with a key member of Funeral Parlor, weak and anti-social Shuu Ouma finds himself with a powerful new weapon, the ability to pull out manifestations of a person’s personality to wield as weapons. Now he must make use of it in order to free Japan once and for all.
While Guilty Crown does not feature mechs, the voids are essentially little more than tools. Like with pilots and their Evangelions, the voids will feel the pain of battle, which essentially lends to much of Guilty Crown’s innate angst.
Attack on Titan
Facing imminent extinction, humanity retreated behind a series of tall, thick walls to escape their most dangerous threat – massive human-like Titans with a taste for human flesh. With an enemy that eats humanity for fun rather than food, they are constantly threatened. As such, it is the duty of every human to defend the species. Enter Eren Yegaer who, after his village was destroyed by Titans breaching the outer wall, he and his adopted sister Mikasa join the Survey Corps. They are one of three factions of the military that scouts and combats Titans outside the walls. After joining in the brutal war, Eren discovers a secret about himself that could unravel what the world thinks they know about Titans.
What is Attack on Titan if not fighting in flesh mechs? That was a bit of a joke, but as Attack on Titan goes on, the more similar it becomes to Evangelion. Secrets about the world are revealed and extreme angst in the main character ensues.
Devilman Crybaby
Akira has always been a little weak and blends into the background, so when his childhood friend asks for help uncovering devils, he agrees. The pair head to Sabbath where many gather for debauchery and to be possessed by devils. When the devils begin to wreck havoc in their new living hosts, Akira agrees to merge bodies with a devil in order to save his friend. Though he now has a voracious devil inside him, he still has the heart of a crybaby.
While not inspired by this particular Devilman series, Hideki Anno did take a lot of inspiration from Devilman as a whole. While Devilman Crybaby isn’t a mecha series, it does capture a distinct sense of angst and suffering, as well as enjoy its philosophy and religious symbolism.
7 Gunbuster (1988-1989)
Hideaki Anno directed, wrote, and worked on the animation of Neon Genesis Evangelion, and his vision is a huge part of what makes the show so unique. However, before Evangelion, there was Gunbuster. When humanity is threatened by monstrous aliens, highly skilled youth are picked from Earth and the Moon to be trained as mecha pilots. Sounds familiar?
Gunbuster was Anno’s first anime, and in the six-episode OVA viewers can see clear shades of what Evangelion would become in the next decade. This doesn’t just apply to the huge mecha that pilots like Noriko, Kazumi, and Jung fly into battle. Heroine Noriko struggles with self-worth issues and baggage about her father, the show starts out fairly dark but waits until the halfway mark to really let loose, and after that point it dials up the angst and reality-bending elements considerably.

OK, Evangelion aren’t technically mechs, but I get it. You want more giant robots punching things.
SSSS.Gridman
A revival of a giant mech show from the early ’90s, Gridman takes the series in a bold new direction.
Incorporating elements from the original show and its American dub, which was renamed Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad, SSSS.Gridman is about a group of plucky teens who start seeing giant monsters in their neighbourhood, though no one else does.
After being sucked into a computer in his friend’s junk shop, Yuta becomes Gridman, a giant mech that can fight these monsters. Of course, all is not as it seems, especially considering that after they defeat the monster, no one in town seems to remember the battle.

The Vision of Escaflowne
This one is a bit of a weird choice, but just as Eva challenges viewers to think about mechs differently, Escaflowne takes an entirely different approach to the genre.
Instead of taking place on an Earth overrun by monsters, Escaflowne takes place on the fantasy world of Gaea, which is in the midst of a war against the Zaibach Empire. The show centres around Hitomi, a Japanese schoolgirl who has been transported to Gaea, and her romantic entanglements with the brash Van Fanel and the charismatic Allen Schezar.
This show might seem like a huge departure from Eva given its focus on romance, but Hitomi’s fate is also somehow tied to the titular Escaflowne, the giant medieval mech that Van pilots.

Released in 1999, Blue Gender’s narrative focuses on a not-so-distant future in which humanity’s role at the top of the food chain has been usurped. A devastating, bug-like species known as the Blue have colonized Earth, forcing its inhabitants to either take refuge on a nearby space station or fight to regain control of their home planet.
While Blue Gender and Evangelion utilize the invading-aliens trope, their similarities do not stop there. Both series thoroughly investigate the effect that these struggles have on the human experience, so fans of the latter would be wise to check out Blue Gender should they find themselves craving more thought-provoking content.
15. Welcome to the N.H.K.
If you want to take a break from robots, Welcome to the N.H.K. is a valid alternative that covers equally deep themes, such as depression and solitude.
Both anime offer a perspective on the backstage of Japanese society even if slightly different. Welcome to the N.H.K. shows us the lives of hikikomori and what solitude looks like.
NGE is more about the high-stress environment and the challenges that young people have to overcome.
The story follows Satou Tatsuhiro, a 22-year-old hikikomori who has completely withdrawn from society due to past traumas. He remains confined to his apartment, experiencing anxiety and paranoia at the mere thought of venturing outside.
His life takes a surprising turn when he encounters Misaki, a mysterious girl who claims she can help him.

Another similarity is given by the role played by Inori Yuzuriha, who resembles Shu’s dead sister and has a detached and mysterious attitude, much like Rei Ayanami.
The story is set in Japan, 2029. The country fell into chaos due to the spreading of the Apocalypse Virus, causing the UN to intervene by removing every political authority and replacing them with the GHQ.
But a decade later, the country was still controlled by this organization with force, and this caused the birth of the Funeral Parlor, a group determined to liberate Japan. Yep, the 2 characters mentioned above work for it!

4. Ergo Proxy
Ergo Proxy is among the deepest and most complex anime to understand due to its intricate narrative structure that is all but straightforward.
It feels more like a futuristic dream that will make you think about your existence. If you loved the philosophy and the theory-crafting of NGE, Ergo Proxy is one the most challenging and complex anime out there.
The story is set in a post-apocalyptic future where survivors live under a dome city called Romdo, to get shelter from the lethal and toxic climate.
To help with mankind’s recovery, AutoReivs, humanoid-like robots, have been created to assist people in their day-to-day lives.
But these automatons have begun contracting an enigmatic disease called the Cogito Virus which grants them self-awareness.
Attack On Titan (Shingeki No Kyojin)
If you’re a fan of anime, then chances are you’ve heard of this anime. It’s very popular and it has a great plot twists. Attack on Titan features the story of three teenagers who seem to live in a post-apocalyptic world. They live in a large wall with three layers, the wall protects humans from giant creatures that eat humans called Titans. This show lacks the mecha genre aspect but is does have a lot of adventure and science fiction. And although the show lacks a psychological genre, the character development in the show is good. Overall, Attack on Titan contains a lot of mystery and action which is something that we’re sure Neon Genesis Evangelion fans will enjoy.
Attack on Titan started as a manga series and was created in 2009. Many people already know this anime because of its popularity. What Attack on Titan and Neon Genesis Evangelion have in common is that they contain mystery, politics, world conflicts, and strange-looking creatures. If you’ve heard of Attack on Titan but still haven’t seen it, believe us when we say that you won’t regret it if you start watching this anime.
The Big O
Another staple of classic 90s anime, The Big 0 has a fantastic sense of style. The series is set in the fictional location of Paradigm City, owned by the monopolistic Paradigm Corporation who’s turned it into a dystopian police state. The show takes place 40 years after an incident has caused all of Paradigm’s citizens to lose their memory and it follows Roger, one of the city’s top “negotiators.”
When the need arises, he calls on the Big O, a giant powerful mech suit from the city’s past. The Big O is a wholly unique show that brings a bit of a film noir element to mecha sci-fi. The first season is very episodic, showing the problems of people that live in the city and Roger’s place in all of it, however, the second season of the show contains one single serialized story arc.
The Big O has some fantastic action and classic animation, mixing in super surreal elements and psychological themes. The film noir aspect really does add unique flavor to The Big O, and Paradigm City has a Gotham-like quality to it.
The Big O is one of the most unique mecha shows from the 90s, and a surefire watch for any fan of Evangelion.
14. Eureka Seven
Another anime with the trope of a young boy piloting a mecha and fighting alongside a group of peers, in this case Eureka.
While Eureka Seven isn’t as complex as NGE (and doesn’t want to be), there are interesting coming-of-age themes and fights against a large-scale threat.
What makes this anime different is the bigger care for environmental issues, nature and also romance, the latter being a key component in the plot.
The story follows Renton Thurston, a 14-year-old boy who dreams of joining the mercenary group Gekkostate for adventure.
His life takes a turn when a robot piloted by a young girl named Eureka crashes into his garage. As they work together, Renton becomes Eureka’s co-pilot, and they join Gekkostate on their journey.
The art and animation are top-notch, with beautifully designed mechs that are sure to impress. And while the sound may be forgettable, the acting is solid, with believable performances from the cast.

This is the story of Madoka Kaname, a typical middle school student who meets a cat-like creature who offers to giver her magical powers in exchanged for fighting witches. Madoka eventually takes up the offer and the world she’s entering in may be a bit too much to handle.
Similar to Bokurano in that Madoka again focuses on Young Children fighting in a situation they don’t perfectly understand. Eva is famous for being a deconstruction on the typical tricks and tropes of the Mecha Genre. Madoka, like Eva, on the surface appears to emulate much of the typical and mundane within its Genre, but steadily reveals itself to be anything but. Because of this deconstruction, Eva has appeal with those who aren’t big fans of the Mecha genre, albeit it making it somewhat controversial with some who love that genre. Madoka is dark, perhaps much darker than Eva upon closer analysis, but it’s steady deconstruction of the Magical Girl genre is why I can recommend it to fans of Eva.
24. Aquarion
Aquarion looks like an NGE clone because they share many things in common: strange robots, alien beings and religious symbols.
The direction of the plot isn’t actually the same and the overall execution is mediocre compared to the quality standard set by Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Earth is threatened by Shadow Angels, mysterious beings that drain the life force out of people.
After they were sealed for 12,000 years, a catastrophe named Holy Genesis brought them back and humanity had to find a way to survive.
The solution is DEAVA, an organization in charge of Aquarion, a powerful robotic weapon. The main character will join this war after his friend is kidnapped by an angel.
13 Mononoke & Evangelion Share Their Avant-Garde Presentation
The avant-garde sequences found throughout the Neon Genesis franchise are some of the best scenes in anime history. For fans in search of similar productions, they needn’t look any further than the eccentric title Mononoke. Set in the wake of the Edo period, Mononoke follows the enigmatic Medicine Seller as he navigates the mystic, spiritual landscape of historical Japan.
