A cringe anime masterpiece that can not be understood by anyone, and that’s why it is infamously coined as the worst-rated anime of all time. I remember watching this years ago, it basically twisted my perception of what is a wonderfully funny-bad anime.

It has a nonsensical plot, and weird teenage girl soldiers with no personality being the lone defenders of humanity against an alien invasion. No one knows why the coloful-haired girls have been chosen, and it seems the creators don’t really care. The girls don’t know how to fight, and most often can’t work out how to shoot a rifle work. Their leader is a guy whose father forces him to wear a painful Mars suit, almost painful like the whole anime.

When one of the girls gets her head shot off it took it takes an army of doctors to analyze her headless body and declare “yep she’s dead alright”. I burst out laughing, and I’m convinced it’s not an anime aimed to be a comedy. If this sounds like the best of the worst cringe-fest, you’re more than welcome to celebrate it with your friends.

Before the high demand for animated shows and movies, the main purpose of CG was to enhance. It was a creative decision rather than a need to speed up production. Most Studios today have a schedule they have to stick to, to please the fans. And to do so, many methods are exploited to cut down the time and cost it usually takes. So some might say CG animation is a miracle to the industry, but some might disagree.

The funny thing about CGI is that it fits so much better in sci-fi anime since it’s a relatively «new» technique and tends to produce a futuristic atmosphere. Such is the case for Expelled from Paradise as it combines the big two genres fit for CGI: sci-fi and mecha.

As is the usual case with sci-fi anime that have mechs in them, Expelled from Paradise tells a post-apocalyptic story of Earth. It’s a setting where humanity has left behind their fragile shells and lived as consciousness stored off-planet until some hacker decides to disturb everyone’s peace.

A group of boys witnesses some strange supernatural events, and there’s also action. It’s a generic anime only with better animation and battles. I must admit that I was a little disappointed, usually, I know how to avoid wasting my time on this type of anime. In this case, I missed big time.

The story itself is interesting, something about a black sun that covers the sky and completely changes the hero’s life. However, it’s full of the usual, “this is fate” cliches that prevent Trinity Seven from being more than just another cringe anime series that contributes nothing to our world.

However, if you’re a fan of fanservice then you can give it a try.

Gantz 0

To many fans, Gantz 0 is the epitome of 3D CGI-based anime. This anime’s visuals will blow many people away with how realistic everything looks. This animation style helped monsters appear gruesome, and the lighting and camera work are equally impressive.

Considering Gantz is a horror-themed anime, fans should expect much gore with Gantz 0. It features all types of bloodshed, from heads exploding to limbs snapping. The sound design applied to these action scenes makes these scenes invigorating to watch.

While the film sets up the team players and world well for newcomers, many suggest getting familiar with Gantz’s source material. The film offers some changes here and there from the source material, but it’d be best to check out the manga before heading into this gruesome film.

Suzu Naito is a high school student that lost her mother when she was younger and it’s heavily affected her life. From being distant from her father to no longer singing, a hobby she once enjoyed and was very talented at, Suzu’s life is rather unentertaining. Her friend Hiroka introduces Suzu to the popular virtual world of “U” to try and help her get out of her shell. Suzu manages to find her singing voice thanks to the “U” and becomes famous. However, after a player known as The Dragon crashes one of her concerts, Suzu sets out to find out more about him.

Belle might not be a complete CGI anime, but the CGI scenes are beautifully animated and pleasant to watch. It’s not every day that music plays an important role in an anime series or film so it’s nice to see that musicals aren’t completely out of the picture. If fans are looking for an anime film to watch with a great soundtrack or want to see a different spin on the classic tale of Beauty and the Beast, this one is worth checking out.

Rent-A-Girlfriend

Following a humiliating breakup with his girlfriend, Kazuya uses a dating app to rent a girlfriend named Chizuru who is later revealed to be his next-door neighbor.

I’m not saying the concept has no potential, but Kazuya is so dumb and completely lacks any backbone that it’s painful to watch. I mean, how can you like a girl after she purposely talks trash about you in front of everyone?

Also, while Chizuru always helps him, he only pulls her deeper into it and he also does not help her at all and treats her pretty badly. He triggers the living hell out of me. So, if you tend to have empathy, I bet you’re going to find it hard sitting through this.

Netflix loves its experiments and Knights of Sidonia is one of those. One can argue that it was handled well compared to the other anime-related titles on the streaming service. Knights of Sidonia is a dramatic and riveting tale in yet again another setting where Earth has been destroyed.

This forced remnants of humanity to live in giant space vessels, typically while in cryo-sleep. That is until an alien race started waking up everyone with hostile motives. Now it’s up to the rudely-awakened Nagate Tanikaze to adjust to his new life and help his race survive against the aliens.

Stand By Me Doraemon

For an anime film, Stand By Me Doraemon offers some of the best use of CGI animation out there. While the Doraemon franchise isn’t as popular in the west, this movie sets a precedent for CGI anime. At first glance, it looks like a Pixar film with roly-poly yet polished character designs.

Doraemon fans will especially enjoy this one to see characters like Nobita and Doraemon in a refreshingly brilliant light. Visuals aside, this anime offers a grand narrative revolving around friendship and family values. Stand By Me Doraemon’s pacing isn’t the best, though. Sometimes events move too fast or too slow. They lack a moderate flow.

The story in this film feels like a recap of the first few episodes and doesn’t offer much new content. The film leans into Nobita’s love life more than the series. This is an excellent place to start for those who’ve never seen Doraemon. It gives you enough information about our cast and their struggles to catapult you into this charming sci-fi world.

Три совершенно разных человека, обладающие разными сильными сторонами и объединенные единой целью. Взять их по отдельности – и ничего особенного они не представляют. Прагматичная высокая дама с резким характером и развитым умом. Богатая красотка, которая хочет заниматься рисованием вопреки желанию семьи. Неряха, плохо общающаяся с людьми и предпочитающая витать в облаках. Сомневаюсь, что подобных персонажей можно назвать привлекательными и оригинальными (хотя, ближе к концу сезона я начал их таковыми воспринимать – все же удачное раскрытие характеров способно творить чудеса). Однако вместе, благодаря своей контрастности, Саяка, Мидори и Цубамэ составляют гармоничное трио с хорошо построенной химией взаимодействий. Как мне кажется, формат с сильно контрастирующими тремя-четырьмя протагонистами идеально вписывается в концепцию аниме про школьные кружки, что на практике уже было доказано десятками похожих тайтлов (да-да, я смотрю на вас, K—On! и Hyouka).

Касательно второстепенных персонажей в Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasuna! говорить особо и нечего – их тут практически нет. Да и, если так подумать, они оказались и не нужны: протагонисты оказываются достаточно яркими, чтобы за ними было интересно наблюдать на протяжении всего сезона. Если же выделять кого-то из второстепенных героев, то можно отметить меланхоличного куратора секции (который, по сути, и не курирует ее вовсе), а также дерзких девиц из школьного комитета. Они интересны хотя бы потому, что идут в разрез со стандартными образами, присущими этим ролям. Кроме того, достаточно любопытны родители Цубамэ, которые фигурируют в одной из серий, а также свихнувшиеся на роботах члены соответствующего кружка. Чуть позже к героиням присоединяется чернокожая любительница звуков по имени Доумеки (Doumeki), но ничем особым она не запоминается. В общем, можно смело говорить, что вся тяжесть тайтла лежит на хрупких плечах трех девушек, которые, впрочем, с этой ношей отлично справляются.

4 Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence

Mamoru Oshii, the director of the hit Ghost in the Shell, was an early adopter of CGI in anime. He utilized the technology in his Patlabor 2 film back in 1993. But Ghost in the Shell 2 saw Oshii fully embrace CGI to bring his cyberpunk vision to life. Especially notable is a haunting scene featuring ghost-hacked sex dolls that still sends chills down the spine today.

Oshii used motion capture from real actresses to animate the dolls with an unnerving, doll-like grace and gave them a porcelain-smooth sheen accented by cold glass eyes. Innocence, a seemingly standalone film, explores philosophical themes of individuality, sexuality, and the intersection of technology and humanity.

8 God Eater

In a world ruined by the Aragami – beasts hungering for human flesh – humanity clings to survival within walled cities. Only the God Eaters, wielding weaponized Aragami cells, stand between humans and extinction. We follow new recruit Lenka Utsugi as he joins Fenrir, an elite anti-Aragami unit, to avenge his fallen sister.

God Eater is produced by Ufotable, the same studio behind the Fate series and Demon Slayer. The character designs in God Eater are unique but not uncanny. They avoid the «plastic» look of some early CGI anime. Movement and expressions are realistic but still retain a hand-drawn quality. While the plot won’t win awards for originality, God Eater definitely stands apart for its quality CGI.

7 Beastars

The CGI in Beastars is done by Orange, a studio that has produced other CGI animes like Land of the Lustrous. However, Beastars represents a high point in Orange’s capabilities. The fur, textures, lighting, and shadows are stunningly realistic. Beastars is set in a world of anthropomorphic animals where predators and prey coexist uneasily.

The story follows wolf student Legoshi at Cherryton Academy. He struggles with his predatory instincts and his feelings for a dwarf rabbit Haru. His feelings for Haru force him to confront how society’s labels shape his own self-perception. Beastars deftly handles these issues through slice-of-life moments and thrilling mystery with the polish of a prestige drama.

The film is about a virtual reality that has become so powerful that anyone who tampers with it might as well ruin the real world.

The «real world» is thus rendered in traditional 2D while the virtual world is all in energetic and electrifying 3D. Summer Wars was thus awarded for this kind of ingenuity and also for how its story presents a significant message to the rapidly changing world we live in today.
