15 horror animes that will trigger a heart attack

Top 50 best halloween anime of all time

Shadows House

Shadows House is a relatively new title, especially in the anime scene. Season 1 aired during Spring 2021 and the sequel is on its way. The story is more mystery-oriented, but it does have some horror aspects that make you tense up as you watch. The characters look cute but the truth behind the Shadows House is quite terrifying. Even though the story diverges from the manga at one point, the authors promise that it will get back on track as they are involved with the production. If you’re an anime-only for this series, you won’t even notice the difference.

Housing Complex C — HBO Max

Adult Swim’s newest anime is the most recent series on this list, and it’s already become a horror classic that horror anime fans need to see. Housing Complex C is a show that focuses on a complex of apartment buildings in a rural Japanese town called Kurosaki. The inhabitants are primarily older people with the youngest of the group, a little girl named Kimi, being the glue that holds them together. When new renters from outside the country move in though, it causes discourse between the residents as xenophobia sets in and awakens a horrific mystery that sees people begin to disappear. This miniseries from Adult Swim hit the ground running with its premiere episode. It perfectly blends atmosphere with a slow-build story to bring intrigue around a creepy mystery that will keep viewers invested. Plus, at breezy four episodes, it makes for a perfect binge for fans that want to watch something in one night.

3 Corpse Party

Corpse Party is an anime based on an RPG Maker game by the same name. It follows the students of Kisaragi Academy who find themselves transported to the old Heavenly Host Elementary School where a great tragedy occurred. As the night progresses, each of the students meets an increasingly gruesome fate as the ghosts from the elementary school take out their revenge on the living.

This anime is not for the faint of heart. It is full of gore and horrific images, making it the perfect anime for a spooky evening. Fans who would like to brave this gruesome show may want to keep the lights on after they watch it.

Supernatural

Monsters are classically horrifying, but less so in this modern age. Still, some of the best anime series feature creatures that go bump in the night.

Hellsing Ultimate

In the night, there are monsters that feed on humanity indiscriminately. To stand against the tide in Britain is the Hellsing Organization. Leader of the organization, Integra Hellsing, believes that to fight monsters, you must use monsters. So among her soldiers, she slays vampires with her powerful pet, Alucard.

While Hellsing: Ultimate might belong more to the Bloody category of horror due to the literal buckets of blood and impressive violence in the series, it is, in essence, about monsters fighting other monsters. Although supernatural, so violent, and as dark as they come, typically it is not particularly scary, but the best supernatural horror series around.

Shiki

The death of 15-year-old Megumi Shimizu kicked off a summer of terror for the residents of the rural Sotoba village. A furious epidemic of anemia leaves villagers dying left and right, but village doctor Toshio Ozaki believes that something more supernatural is afoot.

Although slow to get into it, Shiki, unlike Hellsing, is a vampire anime that can occasionally be quite chilling. The dead eyes really do wonders for making many of the characters look scary enough. Combine that with some pretty good sound effects and music, and Shiki really has a lot working for it. It gets pretty gory near the end, too.

Hell Girl

It is said that if your thirst for revenge is strong enough, you gain access to a special website available only at midnight. There you can ask that the person who wronged you be dragged straight to hell. This is the tale of Ai Enma, the Hell Girl that carries out such requests.

Hell Girl is about equal parts creepy and mindfuckery. There are no jump scares and Ai is really the only spirit within it, but the study of the moral choices within is somewhat terrifying, and, if nothing else, thought-provoking.

5. Angels of Death

Image Via Aniplus

Angels of Death is where this list gets a little bloody. This short series is adapted from a video game of the same name and centers on Rachel Gardner, a girl who wakes up in the basement of a building with no recollection of how she got there. As she searches for a way out, she meets the strange, scythe-wielding Zack and expresses to him that she wants to die. He says he’ll kill her if she helps him find a way out of the building, and the two set off to find an exit, going through each level of the building. The further they get, the more Rachel begins to remember, and soon, her past begins to catch up with her. The anime is heavy on the gore and gruesome imagery and doesn’t shy away from dark or disturbing subject matter. Fans of extreme horror will find this title interesting, horrifying and heart-breaking all in one.

Tokyo Ghoul (2014)

A threat of ghouls invasion in the world immersed like a hurricane. They try to blend with humans and their population, thus dealing with some psychological horror. The story is related to Kaneki, a college student who wants to check out the growing crisis.

However, his attraction to a woman named Rize takes him in a different direction. Soon he discovers that Rize is not any normal human but one of the ghouls. As the series progresses, Kaneki was found in the hospital where his life was saved by transplanting the organ of Rize into his body.

Due to this, he started a dreadful journey as he transformed into a human ghoul.

7 Manga That Blend Horror And Romance

These manga have mastered the framework of perfectly blending elements of horror and romance.

The animation is a little too crude, but it’s usually the storytelling that sells the show instead of the visuals. Each story has its own lesson and narrative rooted in Japanese culture and tradition as well as some hyper-imaginative tales. Make sure to watch this one with the lights off and alone for a better atmosphere.

Theatre of Darkness: Yamishibai is great during its first few seasons, which are generally quite consistent. Around season 4, the anime becomes a lot more hit-and-miss, which unfortunately does hurt its overall quality. That said, at its peak, Yamishibai is one of the best horror anime.

xxxHOLIC

If You Like: Ghost Whisperer, Tales from the CryptScare Vibe: Spooky (Mild)Where to Watch: Crunchyroll, Amazon Prime

The best episodes of xxxHOLIC feel like listening to someone tell a ghost story by candlelight in a dark room. In fact, that’s the premise of one of the show’s scariest episodes. xxxHOLIC follows a teenage boy named Watanuki who makes a curious deal with a witch named Yuuko: if he works for her at her mystical shop, she will take away his ability to see spirits, a talent which has brought him untold grief and frustration over the years. As you might expect, her shop is no ordinary store, and the customers get more than knickknacks when they shop there. She trades in unusual artifacts and dealings with creatures straight out of classic folklore, from kitsune to The Monkey’s Paw.

Featuring CLAMP’s iconic, unusual art style, and a winning cast of characters including Boss Witch Yuuko, poor long-suffering Watanuki, and the cutest store mascot of all time, Mokona, there’s a lot to love here even for those who don’t consider themselves big horror fans. Episodes of xxxHOLIC range from magical romps, to somber tales of loss, to chilling encounters with dark spirits, but there is almost always something going bump in the night.

3. Parasyte: The Maximum

Image Via Adult Swim

Adapted from a 1988 manga series, Parasyte: The Maximum follows high schooler Shinichi Izumi, a normal boy from a nice family that lives in a quiet town. One night, he wakes to find an alien creature known as a Parasyte trying to crawl into his nose to take over his brain. When he bats it aside, it causes the Parasyte to burrow into his arm instead. Because the Parasyte didn’t affect Shinichi’s brain, it’s able to be a separate entity from Shinichi, allowing them to keep their separate personalities. As the two begin to work together to defeat other Parasytes, they learn more about each other’s species. Parasyte -the Maximum- offers a healthy dose of body horror mixed with psychological thrills and moral pondering that makes for a scarily compelling series that’s hard not to get sucked into.

Image Via JNN

Ajin: Demi-Human tells the story of Kei Nagai, a student who discovers he is an Ajin upon being hit by a truck and killed. Kei is forced to go on the run to avoid being used in experimentation, and thus, begins his dive into the world of Ajin and the unrest between Ajin and humans, who treat them as inhuman monsters. Some may ignore this series due to its animation, which is done in a 3D style as opposed to the 2D usually used for anime, but the animation is still decent and it has an incredible story. Between brutal scenes of mutilation and the inhumanity of the government systems, Ajin: Demi-Human will pull you in, horrify you, and leave you wanting more.

There is no shortage of anime where unassuming individuals encounter a displaced creature of dangerous proportions, but they’re able to soften their edges and open their eyes to a new lifestyle that appreciates the simple glories that Earth has to offer. Elfen Lied begins with this predictable trajectory when Kouta and Yuka run into Lucy, an amnesiac humanoid alien with devastating psychic abilities, only each of their lives are decidedly worse by the end of this 14-episode extended exercise in nihilism.

Despite Kouta’s best efforts, Elfen Lied underscores that humanity is a selfish species that will do whatever is necessary to guarantee their survival. Elfen Lied is full of sweeping scenes of brutal violence as Lucy becomes the universe’s perpetual punching bag. Elfen Lied is not for the faint of heart, but it’s a powerful, dark anime that doesn’t pull any punches.

Shiki (2010)

Shiki is… a special case. Was it great? Not really. But it was still quite decent and it did pose some interesting questions. Bonus points for completing the main storyline in 1 season. Vampires aren’t that scary anymore but are a Halloween must. Shiki manages to take a cliche and make it actually creepy, by adding some absolutely terrifying moments and overall atmosphere. The mystery is there, but in the second half it devolves into a weird mix of “humans are monsters” and just overall ridiculous plot points. Still, it’s a good watch and if you like horror you should definitely watch it. The philosophical aspect of the story was also quite intriguing, all things considered.

The anime isn’t available to stream but Funimation does have physical editions of it – DVD and BluRay.Fuyumi Ono, Ryu Fujisaki/Shinchosha, Shueisha/Shiki Production Committee
