Мирное население всех 85 регионов Республики Сан-Магнолии живет обычной размеренной жизнью, наслаждается свободой и окружающим миром, и далеко не все знают о существовании региона под номером 86. Большинство людей даже не подозревает о том, что каждый день ведутся ожесточенные бои с соседним государством, Империей Гиад, где изо дня в день гибнут люди. Ведь в новостях всё время повторяют: “В ходе военной операции человеческих жертв нет”.

Шин на протяжении нескольких лет командует эскадрильей 86-го отряда. После каждой сложной миссии в его “копилке” добавляется очередной жетон, который он забирает у погибшего солдата. Шин теряет товарищей, но отказаться от своей миссии он не собирается. Тем более, что до конца войны осталось всего пара лет.

С появлением нового куратора Лены всё меняется. Он обретает не только сильного наставника, но и верного друга, способного уважать их независимо от цвета волос и глаз. Знакомство главных героев не случайно, и после встречи для них откроется многое…

Сюжет

Республика Сан-Магнолия уже девять лет находится в состоянии войны с Нефритовой Империей. Хотя первоначально Республика понесла огромные потери из-за автономных и механизированных легионов Империи, с тех пор Республика создала свои собственные автономные подразделения, называемые Джаггернаутами, которыми дистанционно командует Супервайзер. M: How closely were you involved with the manga and anime adaptations of 86?

Asato: For the manga, I approved the manuscripts and character designs and answered any questions the artist had about the story and settings.

Pretty much every time, I just said “Wow, these are great!” and had no suggestions for improvement. 

The artist (Motoki Yoshihara) and staff did such a wonderful job, and I’m very thankful.

As for the anime, I attended the scriptwriting meetings, approved character designs and visuals, and answered questions about the story.

For the anime adaptation, there were a lot of questions about the characters, mecha, various items/objects, and so on.

Answering them all was a bit tough…

Which volume to read after the 86 -Eighty Six- anime?

The first season of the 86 -Eighty Six- anime consisting of 23 episodes ended in the end of the volume 3 “Run Through the Battlefront (Finish)” of the light novel series. It covers the early two parts The Republic of San Magnolia Arc and The Empire of Giad Arc.

That is to say, you should read from the volume 4 “Under Pressure” to enter the third story arc of the series, the sequel of the anime series.

It’s also recommended to read the 86 light novel with Kindle cheaper that paperback, and you don’t need to be bothered about out-of-stock condition!

В качестве композиторов для 86 выступили живая легенда Хироюки Савано (Hiroyuki Sawano) и его коллега по цеху Кота Ямамото (Kohta Yamamoto). Это уже не первый раз, когда созданием саундтреков к аниме занимается именно этот дуэт – например, ранее они вместе занимались саундтреками к Attack on Titan, Blue Exorcist, и Seven Deadly Sins. Все, к чему прикасается Савано, в итоге превращается в золото – я не припомню ни единого неудачного саундтрека в его исполнении. Саундтрек в исполнении Савано является своеобразной гарантией того, что тайтл в результате можно будет посмотреть хотя бы ради музыки, каким бы плохим он в целом ни был. Разумеется, саундтрек в 86 получился роскошным. Таким, каким и должен быть саундтрек к истории о противостоянии человечества и восставших машин – эпическим, динамичным, а порой и трагическим. Все в лучших традициях Атаки титанов, истории ведь похожи. Я остался в восторге от фоновой музыки.

Опенинг первого сезона 3-pun 29-byou в исполнении hitorie мне не понравился. Звучит сумбурно, не мелодично, а вокал напоминает неудачную версию опенинга из Токийского Гуля. Естественно, тут все субъективно – ну не люблю я подобные опенинги. Эндинги первого сезона Avid в исполнении SawanoHiroyuki:mizuki и Hands Up to the Sky в исполнении SawanoHiroyukinZk]:Laco получились роскошными. Я не знаю, как Савано удается так круто комбинировать пробирающую до глубины души мелодию с красивейшим вокалом, но ему раз за разом удается создавать нечто пронзительное. Мгновенно добавил в свою музыкальную коллекцию. Опенинг второго сезона Kyoukaisen в исполнении amazarashi я бы не назвал сильно запоминающимся, однако мне он понравился больше первого. Да и визуальный ряд у него поинтереснее будет. Эндинг второго сезона Alchemilla в исполнении Regal Lily наделен необычным вокалом, но меня не впечатлил. В целом, опенинги и эндинги оставили противоречивое впечатление.

When is the 86 -Eighty Six- Season 2?

A second season of the anime has not yet been renewed. However, as a result of the speculation we made above, we are quite hopeful for a new season. The ongoing light novel series has enough source material to adapt and there is enough popularity. However, there was no apparent success in disc sales, and the anime doesn’t have a major exclusive distributor yet such as Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon. Although we have some concerns, the thought that popularity will bring a new season is heavier. When we consider the renewal and production time for a new season, we can say that the 2nd season can be broadcast in 2023 – 2024. But for now, it’s just speculation. Stay tuned for official information.

Episode 7: «Will You Remember Me?» — 9.0

Throughout the past few episodes, Lena had been trying to get approval for reinforcements to be sent to the Spearhead Squadron. During «Will You Remember Me?», a festival takes place, offering all involved a brief but enjoyable celebration. After an ambush kills many of the Spearhead Squadron, Shin reveals to Lena that they will not receive reinforcements, as they are expected to die.

This information shocks Lena, and this episode shows the audience just how hopeless the situation seems. The inclusion of the celebration and this revelation in the same episode provides an excellent juxtaposition and emotional experience for those who watch it.

Episode 1: «Undertaker» — 8.2

The first episode of the series, «Undertaker,» shows Lena going through her day as a Handler, leading a squadron into battle against the Legion, artificially intelligent machines that come from the Giadian Empire. She then receives the offer to lead an elite group known as Spearhead, which she accepts.

This episode sets up Lena’s compassion from the beginning while also showing the public perception of Eighty-Six people, who are referenced in horribly derogatory ways. It is clear that Lena seeks to help the members of the squadrons under her command, and the audience can immediately sympathize with her.

• Чтобы отвлечься от голосов Легиона, главный персонаж Шинъэй Ноудзэн постоянно читает различные книги, которые придуманы неспроста. Автор ранобэ Асато Асато признался, что это вполне реальные книги, прочтенные им, которые в той или иной степени повлияли на него и нашли отражение в романе “86”.
• Песня “3-bun 29-byō” (переводится буквально “3 минуты 29 секунд”), которая звучит в начале аниме, исполнена японской рок-группой Хиториэ, созданной в 2011 году. Изначально группа состояла из 4-х музыкантов, однако в апреле 2019 года основной вокалист Wowaka скоропостижно скончался в 31-летнем возрасте. После 6-месячного перерыва, группа вновь воссоединилась и начала создавать песни.
• Финальная композиция “Avid” звучит в исполнении популярного японского музыканта Хироюки Савано (Hiroyuki Sawano, известный также как проект “SawanoHiroyuki ”). Well, the music and soundtrack of 86 (anime) is really good.

With Hiroyuki Sawano (澤野弘之) helming the music for 86 (anime), it shouldn’t be a surprise that the BGM hits all the feels and emotions in this anime. The instrumental music and songs really complements the mood of the anime.

The lingering sorrow, especially when you hear the OP/ED theme, will remind you of the episodes. That’s how powerful it is.

I really like the both the ending songs of 86 (anime) and I have it on repeat long after S1 has ended.

Am I the only one that associates this song with Shin and his brother?

Every time I listen to this song, I always remember the show-down scene between Shin and his brother, as well as the ending “dream” that Shin had. It’s such a beautiful yet haunting song.

What was interesting (and sad) about the opening was that with each episode, you’ll see the number of people (from the Spearhead Squadron) standing in the grass field increasing.

Full Review

86 is a light novel written by Asato Asato and illustrated by Shirabi. The series received two parts of anime adaptation with the provision of A-1 Pictures. It also has a manga adaptation illustrated by Motoki Yoshihara. Ending its first adaptation just recently, the series received great ratings among the viewers.

I knew 86 anime since the airing of its first cour. Seeing its key visual back then made me think to myself that this anime could be really interesting. However, to avoid from being left hanging every week, I decided not to watch it as it was airing. I even heard news of its episodes being postponed or moved, which added to my decision not to watch it until they say its finished. This series is very popular that I’ve seen screencaps about it which also served as spoilers. At first, I thought I won’t remember the spoilers I’ve seen but my mind is quite playful sometimes that it remembers every detail of what I wanted to forget the most. You will find out more about my feelings about the spoiler I saw and how it affected my watching experience on 86.

Vladilena Milize is a dedicated military Major of Republic of San Magnolia. The Republic is divided in different districts with district 86 involving half-blooded or people from different races. Lena wishes for equality and everyone to recognize the sacrifices of 86 on the battlefield who protects their borders from the legion. Her assignment in the most dangerous squadron Spearhead has exposed her to the harsh reality of being in the frontlines with people her age risking their life for people who never batted an eye on them. The connection of two worlds within paraRAID made the squadron and their commendable Major establish communication and trust. The continuous battle against the ghost of the legion and discrimination among races has been fought by the 86.

I love the way of storytelling on this series especially on the first part where the two different worlds were shown simultaneously. Seeing the other side of the coin is interesting on itself. The series didn’t make me left out of the events happening on both sides. Despite showing two versions of point of views, it wasn’t confusing at all.

Each characters’ sentiments were able to be highlighted even with side characters. Their significance to the story is present until the end which implies that the series has set a very consistent goal that it wants to achieve from the very beginning. I also have to note about Fido, who has always been there for Shin ever since. I feel emotional every time Fido’s view was shown in some episodes.

The slowly developing connection between Lena and almost emotionless Shin is such a sight to see. I love the two of them and I know everyone of the viewers wanted to let them meet in person. Can I just add that I love Lena even the design of her uniforms.

I haven’t seen mecha anime in so long and the juggernauts here were wonderfully made from their design to the strategies that comes along with them and their overall essence to the battle. They also made details even on the ammunitions and the durability of the equipment they use. There was also something that tickles within me every time I hear the bullet hitting the legion’s metal vessel, it was a pleasant sound somehow.

Within a total of 23 episodes, 86 series was able to discuss about discrimination and the life among the privilege and those who are left with no choice but to suffer. There were also points made on how different people see the battlefield and war.

This is one of the series where I was glad that I saw a spoiler beforehand, because if I haven’t, I might be worried the entire time. Spoilers could actually be helpful sometimes. I was also very curious about this series that I finished it quicker than usual. I have to say that the climax was so satisfying to watch. I had every hair in my body standing up as I was watching the last few episodes. Also, I screamed a little bit because that’s the only thing I could do to express my appreciation of how the story has developed to achieve that moment.

With the perfect combination of action, drama, and sci-fi, 86 is definitely a must-watch anime series. I am one with everyone who’s wishing this series to continue with another anime season.

Episode 3: «I Don’t Want To Die» — 8.7

Lena’s relationships with members of the Spearhead Squadron continue to develop, but some are skeptical of her. Lena tells one of the members about an experience she had in which an Eighty-Six person saved her life, leading to her understanding that they are all human as well. During a battle, a miscalculation of Lena’s leads to one of the members of the group being killed by an enemy.

The relationships become tenser as Lena contemplates her role in the operation. This episode helps the audience to sympathize with both Lena and the Spearhead Squadron while acknowledging that Lena has little understanding of the situation, having not even learned the real names of the squad members. 86 has many emotional moments, which puts it on par with many of the best anime on Netflix, though it is not available on the site itself.

Episode 10: «Thank You» — 9.1

The remaining members of the Spearhead Squadron seek out shelter while they make their next plan. They are now free from the Republic, and Shin determines that they should find another nation to live in. Most of the episode is calmer than those leading up to it, which allows the audience to relax and enjoy the change of pace.

This feeling cannot last forever, though, and there exists a tense feeling that something terrible could happen at any moment. In the end, the viewers are reminded of the dangers of the world the characters inhabit. This episode also prominently features Fido, a machine that could be considered one of the best non-Disney animated robots, who provides some emotional moments with the rest of the Spearhead Squadron.
