Tokyo Ghoul is one of the biggest what-ifs in anime history, which is a shame given the immense quality of its first season. Barring an original ending, the show was pretty faithful to the manga and did a great job of adapting the gory action that fans of the series are intimately familiar with.

However, later seasons were a royal disappointment that rushed throughout the manga’s chapters, focusing mostly on the action and even switching up the narrative, which is a cardinal sin for any anime. That being said, there’s no denying that the animation was still brilliant during these battles, with Kaneki’s evolved powers looking mesmerizing at times.

Gurren Lagann: The «Hypest» Show Around

While Neon Genesis Evangelion was a deconstruction of the Mecha genre in its purest form, Tengan Toppa Gurren Lagann is essentially a celebration of it. The series is pure unadulterated Mecha satire, and fans love it. Whether it’s the incredible animation done by Trigger, the larger-than-life characters such as Kamin or Simon, or the infinitely rising power ceiling that grows with each episode.

The mech designs are fantastic, the hype is immeasurable, and the fight choreography is nonsensical yet coherent. If you’re looking for something that will continually blow your socks off every few minutes, there’s nothing better than Gurren Lagann.

Btooom! is like a Battle Royale clone in that the main characters are all sent to a mysterious island. They wake up with bombs and are urged to kill each other in order to survive and get supplies. It’s a dark anime that, unfortunately, was only one season long.

Sadly, Btooom! ended with a lot of questions still up in the air. Although its lack of a continuation is a little disappointing, the anime’s action is still great. Plus, the manga is much longer for those who do actually want to get some answers.

Naruto/Shippuden: Unbreakable Bonds

Naruto and its two and a half-year timeskip Naruto: Shippuden earns its place in the Anime Big Three and as one of the best shonen of all time. Despite the abundance of filler throughout the series, Naruto Uzumaki’s tale of wanting to become Hokage and reuniting with his best friend still captures many people’s hearts, proving it stands the test of time.

Naruto is about forging unbreakable bonds and fighting for what you think is right, no matter the cost. Naruto’s ability to make everyone root for him is endearing, and watching him beat near-impossible odds makes you want to stand up and cheer yourself. In contrast, there are also several heartwrenching and painful moments in the show that help ground Naruto, making you feel his sorrow and hardships, making him a believable and lovable character from beginning to end. There is more here than a show about the power of friendship. It’s one about proving your self-worth and protecting those that are precious to you.

Toradora!: Romantic Comedy At Its Finest

Airing in 2008, Toradora! quickly became one of the best romantic comedies/slice of life Anime ever conceived and still lives in everyone’s heart who has seen it. Only running for 25 episodes, Toradora! still manages to pack so much into each of them, telling a gripping and complete story. Every character feels fleshed out and complex, and the twists will melt your heart.

There’s no time wasted in Toradora! and Ryūji and Taiga will attach themselves to your heart the moment you’re introduced to them and will never let go. There are no downsides to this show other than it only being 25 episodes long, as we would have loved to spend more time with this cast of tremendous characters. If you’ve never seen Toradora!, drop what you’re doing and fix that problem!

Naruto

The story begins during Naruto’s adolescence, around his twelfth birthday. A dunce orphan and a great prankster, he does everything possible to get noticed. His dream is to become the best Hokage to be recognized by the inhabitants of his village. Indeed, the nine-tailed fox sealed in him has stirred up the fear and contempt of the other villagers, who, over time, no longer differentiate between Kyûbi and Naruto. Despite this, Naruto trains hard in order to become a genin, the first level among ninjas. After failing the genin exam 3 times, he finally manages to receive his Konoha forehead band.

March Comes In Like A Lion: Like A Breath Of Fresh Air

March Comes In Like a Lion is a real slow build of a show. If you just read the description, you might think it’s a series about professional Shogi similar to other sports anime. And, while that is the context, it’s not the content. 3-Gatsu is a series about isolation, depression, loneliness, finding yourself, finding your family, and so much more.

It’s quite frankly one of the best series Shaft has ever animated, but not enough people know about it. To put it simply, 3-Gatsu is able to accurately put emotions into words and images, and it will constantly make you feel things you likely haven’t felt in years. And for that reason alone, it’s one of the best.

Jotaro vs. Dio (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders)

In the second season of «Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure» titled «Stardust Crusaders,» the story revolves around the emergence of the vampiric antagonist, Dio Brando, who sets his sights on Jotaro Kujo and his loved ones. The ladies are a force of nature in their own right and dominate on the battlefield with their hardcore assaults (and refusing to allow the ecchi factor to deprive of the fight scenes’ quality). Funny, ferocious, and surprisingly sentimental, Chainsaw Man ticks all the boxes for most anime fans out there.

Present-Day «Iconic» Isekai: The Best Of An Oversaturated Genre

Now, let’s preface this by saying that the Isekai genre is likely one of the most over-saturated genres of Anime to date, and so many of them boil down to 5/10 shows that are serviceable but not memorable. Of course, there are the most well-known names like the .Hack series or Sword Art Online, but the “quality” of the big names can be pretty polarizing. Instead, let’s talk about the best of the best recent Isekai series that innovate on the genre without diverting from what makes it so popular

• Reincarnated As A Slime is the best example of the sub-set of Isekai stories where the MC gets transported to another world, not as another human, but as a monster or other creature. And, among all of them, Reincarnated As A Slime is likely the least experimental, but also just the most enjoyable overall.
• Overlord is another example of the “reincarnated as a monster” series, but this time the MC takes the body of his MMORPG character, who happens to be a 10+ foot tall undead skeleton man. Ironically enough, there are a number of series about a skeleton protagonist in an isekai, but Overlord is the cream of the crop.
• The Rising Of The Shield Hero is probably the most approachable of the “edgy” isekai series, as a lot of them tend to degenerate to some pretty awful stuff rather quickly. Shield Hero is edgy, but not too much, it’s harsh, but just enough, and it’s a unique isekai story, but not all too unique. That said, as the story continues it only gets more and more unique, so we’re excited to see if they keep the anime adaptation going.
• And lastly, where would this entry about recent Isekai be with Re: Zero? Probably the most popular Isekai in the last couple of years, Re: Zero is a wild ride. The concept of “respawning” as the MC’s main ability has been done to death, but Re: Zero changes things up. And, while there is a lot of harem-esque fanservice in it, the things this story has to say about growing up, making connections with others, and facing your problems is something most people don’t expect to hit them as hard as it does. Plus, Subaru is just a fantastic main character.

Kill la Kill

In Kill la Kill, we meet a 17-year-old girl, Ryuko Matoi, who arrives in a Japanese city. She walks around with a strange briefcase on her back that contains half of a pair of scissors. Arriving through the slums, it is the target of a few pickpockets. After correcting them, she learns about the city, which is apparently under the yoke of a dictatorship.

It is within the Honnōji Academy that we find the student council president and leader of the totalitarian movement, Satsuki Kiryūin. Matoi decides to enroll in the academy and challenge the president to tell him more about her father’s death and to find the holder of the second half of the pair of scissors, called when the halves are joined together, the snipitisnips.
